FINALLY. im going to do my home brew tomorrow. Im going to put down the steps in order of what i need to do...let me know if this is right...
1.sanitize equipment..then wash/rinse with hot water.
2. add hot water(not sure of how much) into fermenter
3. add in the home brew(or do i add in the dextrose/sugar before that?)
4. top up with cold water (to a certain level..not sure of)
5. add in yeast and gently stir
6. take a reading with the hydrometer
7. seal lid on top and fill half of the airlock with water.

once ive done this...if its right...i will come back and check what i need to do for gravity readings...or anything extra i need to do before bottling.
cheers.

2. Take lid off kit and place tin in a sink of hot water for 15 mins
3. Add the tin of goop to the fermenter (should be easier to pour when warm)
4. Boil kettle and pour into empty tin and give it a stir (to get everything out of the tin)
5. Pour this into fermenter
6. Add another kettles worth of boiling water to fermenter
7. Add dextrose/sugar
8. Stir the bejeezus out of is to dissolve everything
9. Top up with cold water to 23 litres
10. Stir like buggery
11. Add yeast (sprinkle on top)
12. Seal her up and put in the airlock.

Cheers
Steve

1. Depending on sanitiser, just let it drip dry.
2. probably 2.5l of boiling water or there abouts
3. put the can in hot water before you open it to get in flowing nicely. Rinse with a little more boiling water. Add the sugar and the like once you know the kit has dissolved in the hot water. Ensure sugar is also dissolved. Shouldn't take long.
4. top up to desired OG. If you want it stronger then you add less water. But it will also be more bitter as the kits bitterness will be spread across a smaller batch
5. depending on yeast. If it is dried yeast, most people say just sprinkle it on top and let it go. If liquid, then you need to aerate to the shiz (IMO).
6. take the reading before you pitch the yeast.
7. yep!

1.sanitize equipment..then wash/rinse with hot water. - YES
2. add hot water(not sure of how much) into fermenter - see below
3. add in the home brew(or do i add in the dextrose/sugar before that?) - see below
4. top up with cold water (to a certain level..not sure of) YES. 21L mark for standard beer
EXTRA STEP - Stir the crap out of it!
5. add in yeast and gently stir - Just sprinkle yeast - no need to stir.
6. take a reading with the hydrometer - do this BEFORE ADDING YEAST
7. seal lid on top and fill half of the airlock with water. - YES

with regard to kits/DME/Dex and water, I found the best way is to get the biggest pot you can and add kits/dex/lme etc with COLD water, but it on the stove and gently warm while stiring to disolve all malts/sugars together.. Dont have to boil.

this gets rid of any "malt clumps" that form if using dry malt.

Just adding hot water and kit/dex/dme will work, but I found the above gives a better result of disolving the malt...

Sounds good. I am really loathe to add anything else..... but...

1. If it's no rinse sanitiser, it means just that. No-Rinse. If you have powder from the Coopers kit, then yes, give it a good rinse out
2. Don't add any water.
3. Add the can, then use boiling water to soak the can and get the rest of the goop out. Pour it all in. Add another jug of boiling water to the fermeneter while your at it. NOW ad the powdered stuff (BE2, Dextrose, sugar, whatever you have). Give it all a good stir. YOU MIGHT SEE MALTY LUMPS IF YOU ARE USING DRY MALT. Don't worry about it, and leave them in there.
4. Top up with water to 21litres. If you have a couple of soft drink bottles, sanitise them, fill with water, and put into the freezer a couple of hours before you start. You can then add super-cold water (not frozen) to your fermenter. It will help you balance the temperatures if you need to.
---STOR IT ALL WELL, AND TAKE A HYDROMETER READING IF ITS OVER 1.040, YOU"RE DONE. IF IT"S SOMETHINK LIKE 1.050+, ADD A LITRE MORE WATER.
5. Add yeast once your temp is between 18 & say 22 degrees for now. Just sprinkle it on top of the wort (unfermented beer). No need to stir it in.
6. Take your hydro reading after point four, as mentioned. Although really, it probably doesnt matter. You beer doesnt ferment in seconds.
7. Seal the top, 1/2 fill your SANITISED airlock with boiled, cooled water.

That's it !

When using boiling water depending on your ratio your final temp might be to high to pitch your yeast straight away.. check the side temp gauge against your yeast "recommended" pitching temp then pitch..

If you have your boiling water ratio off and its sitting high it can kill yeast.. = no beer fun BOOO..

happy brewing.

Why do people always suggest hot water for the dex or malt. COLD WATER COLD WATER!! Dissolves it so much easier no lumps. Just like gravy powder.

Brad

******* it those replies were fast.

This might just add confusion for the poor bloke, a mod should choose one and lock this thread !

Jamie, seriously, there's no one golden method to doing this stuff, and the end results are the same. So don't worry if some of us say conflicting things, add more or less to our instructions, theyre insignificant points really.

No lumps huh ? I'll have to try that :)

Good O...now i can start tomorrow...and ill sanitize my **** today so its ready for tomorrow....im the sort of bloke that when i want to try something new...and keep doing it....i like having the right steps/instructions first so i dont **** it up...wanted to make sure i got it right so there was no muck ups and i make a good beer.
will let you guys know tomorrow how i go!

You look set.. good luck!
If my fermenters weren't already full that's how i would be spending my Saturday Arvo

All good advice here, and there is even more in the article section above.
Get this brew down and when you get some time do some reading as you will learn more having done a brew.
One thing that I didn't see mentioned was try to keep your brew temp around 20C for the duration of the ferment and you wil be rewarded with a much nicer finished product.
Anyway, enjoy your first one and welcome to the obsession hobby.

Cheers

Hey Jamie, can you remind me what your recipe is please ?

possibly going to either a draught or lager...i like lagers...dont know if its any different with a draught with ingredients ,etc.....might start off with a lager i think...non branded one (bit cheaper) from the brew store.

I guess my question was 'what else' alart from the kit. Dextrose? Malt ? Maltodextrine ? BE2 ?(which is a mix of all the above)

jamieh - try to brew it around 18-20 degrees if using an ale yeast.

i may go with BE2...unless the owner of the brew store shows me what they use...or what can be used...he will guide me thru what to add in with the liquid brew and yeast....he gave me a run down of what i have to do when i went in there the other day....so ill see how we go...

Try BE2 and another 500g dry malt (often called LDME) if you like maltier beers. Just pick a kit that's a bit bitter (for example a Cerveza kit with BE2 & 500g malt would be way too underhopped unless you added bitterness - save that stuff for your future brews)

I've just deleted almost as many off topic posts as there are on topic ones.

All advice is appreciated regardless of who gives it so long as it is on topic.
