Hi all,

I'm sure people will tell me "USE THE SEARCH" but i just thought i'd ask here, because there are a few brewers on here from Tassie, and i'm going to be joining you very soon (hobart, around mt nelson/lenah valley/mt stuart to be exact).

Anyway, i'm an all grain brewer and i've seen there is a brewshop in town that looked more like a kits & bits type shop, i see there is a bigger one at Glenorchy but their price list is pretty out of date, i'm just wondering where people buy their grain from, by the 1/2 bag or bag?

Hi DJR,
I buy my bulk stuff from the place in Glenorchy by the bag or mulitples there of when I ever I get down to Hobart ( Brew by you) and smaller quanities of specialist grains and hops etc from Craft Brewer. Freight of full bags is a bit prohibitive.

Haven't found any where in Tas that compares with the bigger better homebrew shops on the mainland.

Cheers
Chris

Thanks chris, just the answer i was looking for. I'm the kind of guy who buys a couple of sacks every now and then and then just buys yeast and bits here and there, so i guess the one at glenorchy sounds like it'll suit me.

Now i just need to wait until Moorilla does brewery tours in the new year ;)

Hi DJR,

I buy grain from the one in Glenorchy, Brew By You (they are also a brew-on-premise type operation).
The word is that its up for sale so will have to wait and see whether things change.

A few years back before Brew By You popped up a few of us used to get together and freight down a couple hundred kilos, but this was pretty expensive (still worked out heaps cheaper than buying beer).

As you suspect the one in town is very much centered on Kits, and the owner doesn't have much interest in grains, I don't go to that one for anything anymore.

As Chris does I buy all my specialty grains, hops, yeast and other stuff from G&G, Craftbrewer, etc..

Cheers,
Petr

Amanda at THBS will usually order a bag in for you if you want it.
Other than that the shop's gone downhill a bit the last few years, they no longer sell liquid yeasts, and a lot of their floor stock is OLD.

Things like hops and equipment are often cheaper mail order.

MFS.

I emailed the Brew By You crowd the other day about the price list online - they said that it was accurate, but it hadn't changed since I looked last year, so not sure about that? As for the THBS in town, well I haven't been to them for a long time, as their attitude and service level, along with stock left a lot to be desired!

This of course means that we don't have a lot of choice down here in terms of suppliers - not sure what you do for a living DJR, but maybe you could start up a retail place when you come down! At the moment I do as others do and grab stuff from our site sponsors, but in the New Year (once my masmaster mill arrives) I will be trying to find some local options. Hopefully there are some more locals who have been in the game for a while who know of some good local sources?

Cheers,

Morrie

P.S. You have picked a great place to move to - best of luck with it!

Well i'm down here and just waiting for stuff to come so i can start brewing - will get over to Brew By You to get a bag of base malt when i'm ready to go. I sold my burner in Sydney because it was heavy but i have everything else save for a 3-ring burner, which i can get from K&D Warehouse quite cheaply (i think it was 35 or 40 dollars). As for starting something, i'm not sure i would get into that thing but i'd be happy to organise bulk buys if it came to that. I'm in South Hobart so quite close to everything.

I did bring down about 1.5 to 2 kilos of hop pellets though, so that's sorted. Just have to work out a contact somewhere so i can get some fresh harvest hops this March/April/May (and then start growing 'em in July/August)

p.s. just spoke to Brew By You - the brewery and shop is moving premises to Moonah, the prices are up to date however they are out of pilsner for a little while and it might be after the move till stock of bags comes in. Looks like they just take a bit of stock from the brewery side of things for the bags. Anyway it's probably going to be mid-feb that i'll start brewing anyway, which is when the move is going to happen...

:p

btw, great to see another tassie brewer :D

i only just moved back to burnie at the end of last year. should organise some form of a tassie home brewers meet, there's a few of us now.

should get along to a hopsters meet as well, details here http://www.thbs.intas.net/beer_shows.htm

speaking of thbs, not sure what everyones problem with them is. always been great to me, willing to help out and throw in a few extras at no cost (yeast etc.). far better than brewbyyou who whenever ive been in there dont seem to know their arse from their elbow as far as brewing goes... and i know a few people who have made a brew there to end up with it infected, and they wouldnt give them a refund or anything.

0M39A,

True, BBY have limited brewing knowledge, but they have been far very willing to order grains that we wanted, and sell them on at the same price as we could buy if we lived in Melbs. THBS was not really interested when I approached her about this a number of years ago.

Never made or even tried one of the brews made at BBY.

Already have the HOPSters date penciled in, see you there if you can make it down.
Cheers,
Petr

THBS have never had a problem getting things in for me before, but that was only really yeasts and hops though, but told me when i moved to AG they would get bulk grains in for me no problems. shrugg.

as for hopsters, no way i can make the first one, but who knows after that. is a real problem being on a week night and living in the other end of the state now :(

like i said though, some form of a tasmanian brewers meet could be the way to go... even a case swap? :p

A meeting once every couple of months or even 3-4 times a year would be good.
I guess I better start bottling some of my brews :(

Cheers,
Petr

Yeah was fairly average beer wise, still had a good time though.

Good to meet DJR for the first time, hope some of the others off this list will make it to the next one.

Cheers

average you think?

i wasnt there (live in burnie now :( ), but coopers sparking, nice beer, common though. moo brew hefe... absolutely lovely beer, and would be great to have it in such quantaties, as its so damn expensive. gage road londons best is fantastic as well, but im not a great fan of the lager though.

sure its not an amazing lineup, but still, not bad at all.

damn hopsters being on a thursday night. should be on a weekend for us northeners :p

two changes to the line up. moo brew pale replaced the hefe (which is fine with me though i hadnt had the hefe for a while), and gage roads ipa replaced the lager.

i thought the coopers was missing some of the yeast character i like from the bottle, and both gage roads were ok, but...
never had the london best before but i thought it and the ipa were both too sweet. anyway, hope you can make the next one. willie mentioned they would be serving his seven sheds brewery beer.

the seven sheds... is that the new brewery they started up? tried some of their beers at beerfest... they were fantastic!

and those changes would have been aok with me! moo brew pale is my fav. australian beer, love hopbursted apa's :p and the gage road ipa is another favourite of mine, but as you said, is a little sweet, and lacking in body IMO. still a damn good beer though.

was the gage road bottle or keg served? ive only ever had it bottled, but its ment to be a fair bit better fresh from the keg.

hope i can make the next one as well, but its so damn hard with work and that :( new job so its near impossible to swap/drop shifts.

+1 on the beer comments.
London Best was better than the IPA but still missing some hop character for my liking. The IPA had the body of a 7% beer but was only 5.1%, and way too much crystal.

Hows the brewing going today Joe?

Cheers,
Petr

bottled. they had their new marketing guy give a bit of a talk and he explained why we wont be getting any kegs. something about it taking to long and wouldnt be fresh enough or something. didnt make much sense to me last night so i might not be explaining it right. anyway bottles only, but the london best will be part of the regular line up starting in a few months.

going well, except for the damn smoke alarm going off during the boil  what the heck is that about? its steam!!
anyway, chilling now and my volume looks about right. 18ish litres. hopefully my gravity is around the 1.042 mark and i'll be happy.

G'day Tazman,
I have some spare base grains, and would be happy to sell some on at cost before the supplies to Hobart are restored. How much do you need to get started?
Also check this thread, which was started before BBY updated their story to say that they were becoming a HBS rather than closing down completely.
Cheers,
Petr
