Poisonous gas in brewery kills 5 in Hebei
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2005-05-24 16:41

Five people were suffocated to death on May 19 by hydrogen sulphide given off from the sewage pool in a brewery in Handan City of north China's Hebei Province, said sources with the provincial epidemic prevention department.
At around 3:00 p.m. on May 19, two workers in the Congtai Brewery of Handan City were choked by the poisonous gas when they were checking equipment and facilities in the brewery's sewage pool. Four other workers and fire fighters went down in succession to engage in rescue work.

However, a total of seven people suffered from the gas suffocation in the sewage pool and were rushed to hospital for emergency treatment. Five died in hospital and two others were saved.

Investigation by local epidemic prevention and control department showed that a lot of hydrogen sulphide gas was found in the sewage pool, which was determined to be killer of the victims.

Geez, if they have a sewerage pool in their brewery do you reckon it means they don't bother with such fripperies as CO2 alarms? They certainly didn't have a H2S one by the sounds of it.

The mega breweries in Australia take much better care of their sewage pools.
