This is NOT a drinking game
But Brew-opoly can teach players all there is to know about Canadian microbreweries

Right away, customers ask if it's a drinking game. It's not. But it is a game that features more than 20 Canadian microbreweries.
Brew-opoly, the Canadian version, is a trivia game based on the original Monopoly. Players buy and trade their favourite beers while increasing property values with Brewpubs and Microbreweries - and increasing their knowledge of the Canadian beer industry.

Etobicoke-based Great Lakes Brewery vice-president Peter Bulet Jr. was excited to get a call from Outset Media, responsible for Brew-opoly. He said he played lots of Monopoly as a kid, but had never heard of the brewery version of the game.

"We thought it was a pretty cool idea," Bulet said.

He has yet to play, although Great Lakes Brewery customers' response has been that of intrigue. Those who have played say it is loads of fun.

Great Lakes Brewery beer graces the cover of the game: Black Jack black lager, "the Park Place of beers," according to Bulet, who was recently at Sherway Gardens and saw store shelves stocked with the game.

An American version of Brew-opoly was the inspiration for Mark Whiteside of Outset Media to create a Canadian one.

Once inspiration struck, Whiteside began calling province to province. The game includes microbreweries from all 10 provinces and even the Yukon.

There are quite a number from Ontario and British Columbia. Whiteside asked breweries to send him their beer and glass-wear.

The game's production manager stresses that it is not a drinking game.

"There is no card that says chug-a-lug five beers," Whiteside said.

The Chance or Community Chest equivalent cards ask players to complete such tasks as singing Ninety-nine bottles of Beer on the Wall.

"There is a lot of humour injected," he said.

The object of the game is to buy as many beers or brands as you can, he said.

Brew-opoly can be purchased at private liquor stores across Canada, in gift and specialty stores and microbreweries. The game hit stores mid-September. Brew-opoly is for two to six players.

Lion Nathan and the Fosters group would have a pretty big slice of the Australian goop market anyway I would have thought, what with the Tooheys and Cascade lines. Black Rock is also owned by Lion Nathan IIRC.
