I'm putting the final touches on my new set-up, and need some advice about a brew-bench. I'm going single tier with 3 SS vessels- with electric power to HLT vessel, insulated tun and Italian burner under boil kettle- all single tier, 1 march pump, plate chiller.

I've got my eye on a cheap SS bench with a solid top, and built in undershelf. My question is- if I have the burner on the bench (on it's stand), will the rest of the SS unit get so hot as to damage bits and pieces that are in contact with it- eg, stuff sitting on the bottom shelf. Would this be fixed by placing a concrete tile or similar under the burner assembly- or would this make it worse as the tile absorbed and retained heat.

Appreciate advice,

The bench won't get anywhere near hot enough to damage stuff sitting on or around it, it might be hot to the touch, but that should be all. Most of the heat will go up into the kettle, and what goes down into the bench will dissipate quickly because of its large surface area. A concrete tile would certainly insulate the bench against heat transmitted into it quite well, but I doubt it will be necessary

thats really an important question. Ive almost destroyed my brew bench (SS-sheet with wooden inlet) by using a mighty burner. The surface under the burner got very, very hot, that I was fearing the wooden inlet would burn. Anyway, any heat that gets absorbed by a material under the burner is a loss for your kettle.

So my solution to this problem was to put another sheet of SS between the burner and the bench:

now the bench stays cool and that SS-sheet works like a reflector, so the over all efficiency has gone up.
