doc's post about xmas beers and all this talk about big brews got me thinking.

what would be better,

an imperial IPA based on an english style ie buckets of goldings or an yank style with amarillo and simcoe etc

ie would the high IBU's be better with yank style hops or uk style?

and how long should it sit before attempting to drink it ??

hi bonk
do a search for the sister star of the sun ipa.bittering it uses chinook then the flavour and aroma are english ekg and fuggles.
as to when to drink i guess that depends on how eager you are.tried my hourglass last night and im still nursing my hangover. <_<
big beers deserve respect.not a session beer unless your after a bad next day.

cheers

OT - i keep hearing about this "hourglass" ipa, where exactly can i see the recipe?

ok, being gigging around at work and looking at the recipes out there i'm leaning towards an IPA from england. so based on that is the following rough idea.

not quite in the league of the demon ale but just thinking out loud.

(the hops are 14g single plugs)

big d, looked at that sister star, not sure, thats a lot of chinook? have you brewed that beasty???

yep put it down yesterday.all went to plan.hit og bang on so im happy.the aromas from the kettle with 197 grams hops was unreal.
just hope this brew is to my taste if not least ive done it and will do some dfferent big beers.

cheers

The best IPAs start at about OG 1075

With huge hop additions (like my 410g of Goldings in my Trad. IPA) the equation for calculating IBU breaks down: as you add more and more hops you ge less and less IBUs from each gram of hops

hi bonk northern neighbour
beersmith says 120.7 ibus
but i will be happy with 153 ibu
either way will let all no if it turns out drinkable in time.
time i guess depends on your tastebuds and bitterness

cheers
