hey all,

i'm currently mid-boil and (was always going to happen, was just a matter of time), when i pulled the bag out for mash out, i forgot about my thermometer in the kettle and sure enough heard a slight rip. ended up grabbing it quick smart and there seems to be a smallish amount of grain in the boil now - less than a smallish handful if that.

will this affect the taste at all? astringency-wise etc etc?

i'll be whirlpooling it with the hops in any case but just wanted to hear some thoughts.

I had a grain spill, probably 2 handfulls, it was enough to cake around and burn to my exposed element urn... Worst brew night ever for me. Eventually I worked out what was going on (wouldn't boil and thermostat kept shutting urn off) and drained urn, cleaned, re-filled and re-commenced.... Was about 1am by the time I finished :(

And the beer ended up total ****, yours will be fine though with such a small amount of grain.

You should probably be more worried about having a scorched human flesh taste than anything else Fletcher Steel Hands

Its probably ******, ferment it anyway, bottle up and send to me.....will PM address...

Its my pleasure.

I've sometimes lost a handful of grain stirring the braumeister and just scooped it out with a sieve as I come up to boil.

so, had a few people taste this over the past few days/week, and it was a kolsch so had minimal hops added. they've mentioned it had a slight grainy-ness to it! i'm sure in a pale ale or hoppier beer this would have been masked but in my kolsch, while it's not overpowering, it's still noticeable; i'm a bit annoyed but will learn from the accident/mistake. i'm always my worst critic :(

i still like it, but will know for next time to change the brew midway through the day to something hoppier if needed haha

this is exactly why i am avoiding getting a bolt through thermometer in my pot, as much as it would be really handy... i can see it ripping a bag too easy.

i have a 'milk' thermometer on the way to leave in the mash

ah live and learn. i'll not do it again in a hurry. for the one batch that was impacted negatively in a very small manner, the benefits of having that thermometer greatly outweigh it

If a milk thermometer is anything like your avatar where do I get one online?

I had the same thing happen to me on Sunday and while stirring during mash out 3/4 of the grain escaped and sat on the bottom. Ended up getting it all out with a strainer but just worried now that I might have burned the grain that was sitting on the bottom while I was ramping up the temp. Was a dark ale with EBC of 48 so should be ok. Bag was on its second brew too!

How does the grain get out of your bag? I'm guessing the bag doesn't go around the rim of your pot?

... i think it might be against forum rules to post what you are thinking of ;)

About 50mm of the stitching came undone at the bottom. Still ended up with 21L of clear wort in the fermenter that had an OG 4 points higher than expected so hopefully it still tasted good.

All will be good mate. Ive done it before...think we all have at least once
Beer will still come out of it and most likely still taste awesome. No biggie

Had a brain fade on sunday and started pouring grain without bag in. Realised and used sieve to get most out. Dropped temp below what I wanted but **** happens and it turned out nice again.
