Best Before..

Bought a bag of Hoepfner pilsner malt today and noticed on the small sticker attached, " best before sept 2004 " manufactured 2002.
Is it over the hill? or does malt really last for years with no discernable effect on taste?

If it is in a sealed plastic bag and has been stored half way properly (i.e. dry) it should be OK and not slack. Generally, lager malts take longer to sell than ale malts, so check the dates.
