NAPLES, Fla. - A blow to the head with a beer bottle may have saved Sally Hampton's life. While doctors were examining her after the barroom attack, they discovered a brain tumor that could have killed her.The tumor was removed, and Hampton, 64, is fully recovered.
On Monday, she testified against her attacker, Fidel Trujillo, who was convicted of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and sentenced to 12 1/2 years in prison.
"It was one of the worst things that could happen to an elderly person, but in the end it saved her life," prosecutor Erik Lombillo said.
Hampton was attacked July 4 at a bar in Immokalee, a farming town in southwestern Florida. According to prosecutors, she put her hand on Trujillo's shoulder to lead him out of the place when the bartender wanted to close up. Trujillo bashed her with a bottle and kicked her in the head and body when she fell.
Hampton was taken to Lehigh Regional Medical Center with injuries that were not life-threatening. During a test, doctors found the tumor.

And the bad guy went to jail. Drinks all round!

Beer and seaweed sustain missing boater

CHARLOTTE COUNTY -- Search and rescue teams this morning found a North Fort Myers man who was reported missing several days after he set off on a rowboat trip, with little more than a case of beer to sustain him.

A Charlotte County Sheriffs helicopter spotted Ronald S. Kimball, 44, and his 14-foot fiberglass Dixie Craft boat on a mangrove island near Pirate Harbor. A Sheriffs marine patrol boat brought him back to the city.

Kimball told Punta Gorda police that he left Saturday morning and rowed to Pine Island, about 20 miles away. He told authorities that he wanted to think through personal matters.

But strong winds slowed his trip back to Punta Gorda. According to police, he resorted to eating seaweed and grasses.

His wife reported his disappearance Tuesday afternoon.

Kimball, who brought no cell phone, marine radio or other communication device on the trip, was embarrassed that his disappearance had sparked a widespread search effort. He still planned to complete the trip.

Upon his return to Punta Gorda, Kimball volunteered for examination by mental health professionals.

Beer saves man from avalanche

A SLOVAK man trapped in his car under an avalanche freed himself by drinking 60 bottles of beer and urinating on the snow to melt it.

Rescue teams found Richard Kral drunk and staggering along a mountain path four days after his Audi was buried in Slovakia's Tatra mountains.
He told them that after the avalanche, he had opened his car window and tried to dig his way out with his hands.

But he realised the snow was falling faster than he could dig. and would soon fill his car.

He had 60 500ml bottles of beer in his car as he was going on holiday, and after cracking one open to think about the problem he realised he could urinate on the snow to melt it.

"It was hard and now my kidneys and liver hurt," he said later. "But I'm glad the beer I took on holiday turned out to be useful."
