A WOMAN accused of murdering her husband after she allegedly set his genitals alight has been granted strict bail with home detention.

Rajini Narayan, 44, was released yesterday despite a psychiatrist's opinion that she did not fully understand how her actions had resulted in murder charges.

Ms Narayan on December 7 allegedly doused her husband Satish's genitals with petrol as he slept in their suburban Adelaide home and set him alight. The fire then spread to the rest of the house in Unley.

Ms Narayan and the couple's three children escaped. The fire damaged a neighbouring property and caused about $1 million worth of damage.

Mr Narayan suffered burns to 85 per cent of his body and died in the Royal Adelaide Hospital on December 27. Charges of endangering life were this week upgraded to murder.

"The gravity of the offence is self-evident but my present view is that apart from that gravity, the presumption in favour of bail remains and that none of the other relevant considerations stand in the way," Adelaide magistrate William Ackland said yesterday.

Representing Ms Narayan, lawyer Michael Dadds yesterday tabled a report in the court by psychiatrist Craig Raeside, which recommended she be subject to further assessment, monitoring, counselling and treatment while on bail.

Crown prosecutor Lucy Boord told the court Ms Narayan should not be granted bail because she did not understand the gravity of her actions.

"Although clearly Dr Raeside ... suggests that she's not a risk, the prosecution is still very concerned, as is Dr Raeside, about how her understanding or comprehension of her actions have landed her in this particular situation," Ms Boord said.

"Prosecutors are still very concerned about the accused herself, coupled with that the nature of her offending (and) the premeditation of the offending."

Ms Boord argued that home detention would not be a deterrent to Ms Narayan committing further crimes.

In an earlier hearing during the week, Ms Boord said Ms Narayan was allegedly heard outside the house saying her husband loved another woman and was having an affair.

It was alleged she said: "His penis should belong to me. I wanted to burn his penis so it didn't belong to anyone else."
