Could picture myself in retirement resurrecting some monstrous old plane engine, mounting on a trailer, dragging around the country and cranking it up wherever motoring enthusiasts gather.

Just found a new motor for the ute. Its still a 4cyl so the RTA shouldnt have any problems with it

Only problem I can see will be getting your emissions sorted, and thus, finding a position to mount a catalytic converter that will be roughly the size of the Hindenburg.
 
You may need to hammer out the trans tunnel a fraction too.

Its a diesel, so no pollution gear required, plus my ute is to old for that crap

There a a couple of blokes who do that with a Pratt & Whitney out of a Catalina that they take to airshows.
Sounds glorious.

I got my inspectors ticket, i'll pass it for you no worries. (It happened after I seen it of coarse)
