I was having a bit of a clean up in the garage this morning when i found a milk crate full of bottles of an infected batch of Old Ale i made back in early 2010.

I was cleaning a fermenter out in the back yard and i thought...... might as well drain the bottles and get rid of them, i dont bottle at all any more.

First few bottles opened normally with a slight Tssssshh and i tipped them out down the drain.

Then i grabbed another bottle, grabbed the cap and started to turn it. All i heard was a sound similar to a large baloon popping "BOOM" and it literally felt like someone punched me in the eye.

I dropped the bottle, said some well selected swear words and instinctively held my hand over my eye. It felt wet and greasy and i thought...... shit i have popped my eyeball.

Thank god it was just blood, and my eye is fine.

was a close call though.

Best bit is i have to go to a wedding in a few hours looking like this :(

Its a definate improvement on your self portrait in your avatar :D . Good to hear you came away pretty much unharmed mate. Cool story for the wedding guest' though haha.

Thats a close call Tony, I think you deserve a beer from a keg for safety reasons of course.

Dr Rowy prescribes a few off the keg prior to the Wedding.....................................

I did the rest of the bottles with safety glasses on and welding gloves, and pointed the bottles away from my face as i opened them.

dont look to far from it, just alot less hair :p that was a close call there tony

JFC that was close

You sure do have purty eyes too...

Bitten by a beer ;)
A guy up here had to get his eyeball stitched up after a similar incident. His was an old perculier clone - must be that breed that likes punching on.

It's a feeling that only those who have experienced know. The hand over eye socket, wet slimy feeling.... and that pop sound to associate something bad with.

Been there except the pop was my eye and the greasy feeling was eye fluid.... never forget the sound or those 5 seconds afterwards of not knowing what it was or what to do.

You're lucky Tony - buy a lotto mate :)

That's a close call mate, glad it wasn't worse.

Another good reason not to bottle...

Jeze mate..... how is your eye now?

Rooted. Actually smashed the lens and wiped out the iris as well. Penetrating injury by side cutter pliers 20 years ago and still a daily reminder of it because i only have some colour vision in that eye which is all blurred and diffused due to no lens as well as huge cornea scar and no iris. Glaucoma now due to injury and currently undergoing laser surgery every 6 months to treat it to more or less save it from removal.

So yeah you are a lucky chap. Been there and wish i never had. I wear glasses from the second I wake to the second I go to bed. Prescription wrap around sunnies if out side ( with no iris is so ******* bright it's not funny ) for constant protection and full face shields when mowing, wipper snippering or even trimming roses etc.

Bloody hell. I had an incident with my right eye 15 or so years ago that thankfully left me only with scar tissue and glare sensitivity. In no way does my experience compare to yours, but that first quote up there...yep...extremely visceral sensation that one. I also am huge on eye-protection now...I just have no interest in seeing eye specialists ever again!

Hope you have a swift recovery Tony, and may tomorrows headache be only due to tonights fun.

I got some Grolsch bottles off an AHB member last week to put some Stouts in etc - probably another added bonus using those for home brewing. Anyone ever had one of those blow up?

I had one over-pressure and it just squirted out the seal. ymmv
