Ok, after a total #$% of a day I decided to buy a James Squire Porter and Cascade Pale Ale of the way home (10:30pm)

The pale ale was light clean slight sweet then bitter... nice!

the porter thinish, nice head, very Choc! Nice!!!

Now i have never brewed Ale..or what ever Porter is

Whats the difference between a Pale ale and a Lager or Pilsner

I might have to start brewing Ale if thats the case dame nice!

How do they get the pale ale so very clean and crisp! no other flavours just very clean

Some one correct me if I'm wrong

I belive the main difference between lagers and ales
is the type of yeast used.

lager yeast is a top fermenting yeast that works best at lower temps

ale yeast is a bottom fermenter and likes it slightly warmer, low 20's

I forgot to add
that ales are usally not as carbonated as lagers

So if you prep a wort (say a very light pilsner malt) then you need to Yeast it

if you use a Lager yeast its a Pilsner/Lager
if you use a Alf Yeats its a pale ale

(again vary the C02 to suit)

maybe different hops , bitter / aroma's?

interesting i guess then the coopers Lager kits i used to make were really a Ale then? since it had a Ale Yeast?

I'd say pretty much 95% of the "lager" kits out there in aus stores are ales. They all ship with ale yeast. Theres a few exceptions though, I beleive a few ship with genuine lager yeast, but specify that you need to keep the brew below 15 to retain lager characteristics.
