Airlock Sniffing

Is it wrong?
I caught myself doing some serious sniffing just then.
You know how it goes, go start with a little sniff once in a while, you start to experiment and learn not no open the fermenter lid stuck your head in and draw in a good 250mls of extreme burning nose pain. (what is that burning, sulphur? CO2?) then one day you've had a few beers and you wander in, like tonight, and there's the last lager for the year double batch blooping away like bursts of machine gun fire. I take a sniff and "whoa! :blink: " German Hallertauer Mittlefruh and Czech Saaz whole hops and Bo Lager yeast working overtime at about 11C :beer: , next minute I'm snorting the airlock like a madman!

Is this a bad idea?
Can I OD on CO2 and pass out, found dead later slumped over the best 40litres of Bohemain Pilsner I've ever made?

edit- i think it's the middle one so I voted for that. but i'd be interested to know. i was going to wait and ask DrKarl but i CBF'd.

Yep

Guilty as charged. Sniffed many an airlock. Goes hand in hand with tasting the hydrometer sample

In fact I'm off now to check on the Pilsener fermenting in the fridge.

A Cautionary Tale:

I remember an early "sniffing" experience with an airlock full of sodium metabisulfite ...

...after picking myself up off the floor and suffering recurring headaches for about a week, I soon discovered iodophor for filling my airlocks.

Years later I am still wary of sniffing airlocks ...certainly I only sniff my own airlocks and NEVER share airlocks with other brewers :blink:

I feel ashamed to admit it, but yes... I'm an airlock sniffer, and not just on the odd occasion either. I prefer sniffing my sweet fruity ales over my sulphury lagers. A couple of times when I've gotten home from work, I've smelt the airlock aromas as soon as I've opened the front door (with the fermentor in the back room). It is at that point when a make a beeline straight for the airlock so I can get a fresh sniff from the airlock, just as it bloops.........AAAAHHHHhh .........MMMmmm :blink: No, wait, isn't admitting you've got a problem the first sign that your on the road to recovery? Isn't it?

im not much of a lager sniffer, especially if it is sulfurous. but a well hopped ale can leave me light headed.

even been known to give the fermenter a gentle press to get the next "bloop"!!

I love nothing more than a fresh batch of well hopped ale bubbling away, and im only a kit brewer!

for info sniffing high levels of co2 may give you a sense of euphoria, just before it sends you hypoxic in saying that i severely doubt the low quantities of co2 comming from your airlock will create either of the above conditions, so enjoy

kai, wort has to be allowed to start fermenting for an airlock even to become an issue

I sniff.Its mandatory.Never been caught and dont care if i do get caught.Its my wort and i will do as i please with it.Have i a problem.Maybe but beats petrol snipping as most of the other local wonders do on mass.
Didnt vote as nothing matches what i think.
