I thought so :)

Seeing that it is supposed to be used all once opened (and stored cool???)
at a dosage rate of 14g/hl/EBC

Assuming that 1g=1mL (it's probably a lot heavier),
and you wanted to raise your colour by 20EBC.

A 5L bucket will do 1785 L.

Now seeing that according to my ProMash,
7kg of Carafa Special III will do the same trick
to a batch that size at a retail cost of around $20...

This is an interesting post, particularly Warrens input.

I had the opportunity on the weekend (be it good or bad) of tasting the new beer "Carlton Black".

My first thought was "this beer is supposed to be a Porter style but it is sweet" (IMO).

I now wonder if the Carlton Brewery is not using this adjunct to achieve the colour without getting that roast/choc/coffee flavour that one might expect.

Sorry to hijack you thread Darren, I wish you luck with your very late addition of colour.
BTW you can get distillers caramel from Brewcraft and others as a spirit additive.
I dont know how much you would need to change the colour of 20 litres
of beer!! <_<

Cheers

Here's an equivalent that's far cheaper $4 (US) per 75g jar Good for 140 gallons of beer. Quarter teaspoon per gallon is equivalent to 48,000 EBCs !!

Sounds like it does the same job as Sinimar and far, far cheaper. Would have to order from America though.

At only approx $5 a jar, how you gonna do it cheaper than that? I shudder to think... ;)

Worth checking out. Providing local distributors have it.

On the Swift website they do mention caramel colouring. No prices though.

Could well answer Dicko's question re; "Carlton Black". I agree Dicko, it's basically their stock beer with some sort of post fermentation colouring added.

Bet it is more than $5. By the time i call them, get it sent over.
I never make dark beers so any that is left over will go to waste.
A kilo of carafa special and half an hour at the stove just sounds easier too

Hey Guys,
Quick update. Racked the beer to secondary. The colour of the beer is close to what I was after.
It is amazing how a bit of suspended yeast can lighten the appearance of a beer.
cheers
Darren

Yep,

That's the beauty of glass carboys. You can watch the veil of yeast travel downwards and the beer darkening from the top. That's where glass is good easy to visualise when the beer's finished. Especially when you're a lazy sod like me who likes to rack straight from primary to keg.

Good to see it all worked out Darren.
