Another week gone by of wasted taxpayer dollars, discussing O/T payments, let's have some policy making, no wonder PH's popularity is rising, they should leave the O/T as it was and let businesses who want to open weekends do what they have always done and come to some cash in hand arrangements with their staff and everyone is happy.
 
I can not understand what the big deal is. O/T is over time.... correct.

Work for 7.5 hours a day and continue to work beyond this is overtime.


If your chosen days to work are on a weekend and not during the week, how is this O/T.

If the rate of pay is incorrect for the job at hand then that is the argument, not O/T rates.

There's a clause in the fair work agreement that states for Sunday only that due compensation is granted for those of us that are away from our family on that day. Saturday is treated as normal but can't we have one day of family time. The kids are at school all week & home on weekends so it's pretty ****** that I go to work at 5AM & get home after 3PM for a few hours with the kids before their off to school again for the week. It think businesses should be made pay penalty rates on Sunday's if they choose to open. I think it's fair that those of us who have to go to work, be granted as such. I'd rather have the day off with the family than get the extra money. These guys have the audacity to call themselves The Fair Work Commission? Go figure!
 
That's a valid point ,but it is a penalty to the employer to stay open and serve those with a day off work.

If people want a coffee on a Sunday $8.00. Monday to Saturday $4.50, are we happy to pay for the difference?

Then it slides to $8.00 all the time. Been there seen that. I live in Victoria.

Of course by that you mean have staff set up companys, register for an ABN and work as independent contractors with all the correct, penalty tax and workplace deductions..
 
It's quite simple really, current employees are sporting the wrong hairstyle.

They really need to grow a long forelock so they can tug it in the presence of the boss.
 
Wage costs snap at the heels of an inferior product/service. Started my working life at 16 for a company that paid adult wages and expected adult work and attitude. All the penalties and most of all, a culture of respect for the workers. They were raking in the money and knew their staff were the key to their success. That was 42 years ago. "This used to be one hell uva country."

it's all ****** up anyway as the fast food giants haven't paid penalty rates for eons

why were they exempt? and little johnny lowered the age kids could work so they pay even less
 
The point is there are far more important things that both major parties should be discussing than overtime rates, surely if an independant body can't put forward a proposition then it has to be sorted between employers and employees.
Looking at the members we have in parliament today I can only say heaven help us, and I would like to know who threw Dutton's hat into the ring as a prospective leader of the opposition. That's really going from bad to worse, if it looks like a dope, talks like a dope, then its a dope.

I started my working life at 15 & I was pretty sought after from job to job.
Always had full time work & always offered full time work. Unfortunately the **** hole I'm at now pays ****, treats people like **** but still demands a caring passionate attitude from the workers. This place is really pushing for no penalty rates & they'll probably succeed. Thank the Lord I'm leaving this year as I've had enough of the delusional ******** that goes on there. We do over $20,000.00 per day in the department I work & get to spend about 30hrs on wages for the day. It's a bit like the old phrase, We're a bit short staffed today, if you could do the work of 3, that would be great.
Kiss my arse Coles & I'm so looking forward to my verbal confrontation with the little ****** that calls himself the manager.

And they still make almost double the minimum (adult) wage paid in the US. (no tips of course). Not a bad earner whilst living under mum and dads roof. I know its easy to be cynical about the deal, but its a whole lot better than leaving school at 18 with zero work experience under your belt because you decided flipping burgers or stacking shelves was beneath you, or more importantly, zero concept of your responsibility as an employee.

No chance of any decent policy with the current crop of pollies (from either side). An even less chance of decent and intelligent policy from Pauline.

Love your determination WEAL, but don't stop at merely venting on a homebrewing forum. Head on down to the Trades Hall tomorrow at 10:30am and sing in unison with your fellow comrades. Keep up the good fight brother! :beer:
