I've just picked up a really good book of recipes ('More Homebrew Favorites' by Lutzen and Stevens) however being American they are all 5 gallon / 18.9 litre batches.

What is the easy way to convert these recipes to 23 litre batches? Do you just add 21.7% (18.9 litres + 21.7% = 23 litres) to all ingredients?

Hey Fish,

You could always try the online conversion tables.....

Fish......For each ingredient u could do this;

.....kg's of ingredient = 18.9 ltrs (for 5 gallon)
x kgs u need = 23 ltrs ( for your batch)

so x equals whatever is above it multiplied by whatever is beside it divided by whatever is left......

So say the recipie called for 4kgs of malt in 5 gallons;

4=18.9
x=23

Then 4*23/18.9 = 4.87 kgs will be required.....

Who knew Uni maths would actually be useful......................

No offence mate, but that's like Yr 8 maths ;) It's just basic ratios.

Essentially from the first line you work out Kgs of ingredients per litre from the original recipe then multiply it by whatever size your batch is.

Same example:

4kg:18.9L = xkg:23L

x = 4/18.9
x = .211640' kg/litre

23x=4.867724'

Same result, of course.

You guys possiably already have this program , but it is a handly little tool
Converts just about everything you need , save it to a folder then create a shortcut for it
