    Flip Top Bottles

I can't comment specifically on the Mangrove Jacks flip tops but I bought a bunch of Groslch ones from FB marketplace and they have been great, never had an issue with the seals or oxidation and I've left some red ales in there for many months to condition. So it might be a specific issue with...

2023 - What are you brewing?

Just finished a batch of AG ginger beer - and it is unintentionally my first sour. Boy did that Lacto get a hold of it. Hasn't carbed properly in bottle due to just getting more sour. I don't hate it, but my partner does not like it which is a bummer as it was made pretty much entirely for her...

Temperature Control after bottling and during long term storage.

Interestingly I just finished a few batches that seem to be impacted by temperature. I let them bottle condition in my ferment fridge, using a heater belt to increase the temp, it gets a lot hotter than the old plastic plate heater I used previously. Most of the bottles are fine so far, but some...

Temperature Control after bottling and during long term storage.

If you have power in the shed then I'd recommend a bar fridge or just a regular sized fridge only off FB marketplace or Gumtree - I picked up a fridge for $150 of marketplace, allows me to store over 100L cold. Just got to keep an eye out and be quick, fridge only, rather than fridge + freezer...

Is it just me, or is it REALLY expensive to buy commercially made wine and beer? lol

Tui and Speights are an acquired taste even for mega swill. Interesting re prices in the South Island, my primary experience has been with the prices in Auckland.

Is it just me, or is it REALLY expensive to buy commercially made wine and beer? lol

Mate I hear you and it's so much worse in Australia. Longneck of Sparkling ale - when not on special must be at least AUD$8 or $9 these days (Dunno haven't bought them for a long time). You can't by a dozen beers here for some reason, so if you are heading to a party instead of just being able...

Heat pump water heater rebates for Victorians

Yeah - I've read some of the stuff from the scientists who have lost the will to sugar coat things. They know why the majority express optimism, to counteract the all too human instinct to just go full steam ahead if there's nothing that can be done. They may well be right, maybe we miss our...

Heat pump water heater rebates for Victorians

Yep AGL were the culprits for me as well. I haven't stayed with an insurance provider longer than a year for our house yet, a couple car insurers have waited till the second renewal to jack up the cost of the policy, while at the same time reducing the amount of cover so you are paying like 40%...

Heat pump water heater rebates for Victorians

Interesting thread - I've been considering one of these given the subsidies available and given the insane energy price increases that have been foisted on us as of this month (Will probably add 50% to electricity bill, the off peak rates have been increased 60-96% which is when we use most of...

    Inkbird Error

I bought an inkbird unit as my first temp controller. It had a manufacturing fault that is well known by the company but they refuse to recognize it as would have to recall and refund a ton of units based on how common the issue seems to be - and some people might sue them for damage to their...

    Australian Wheat Ale Recipes?

Another update - it's finally conditioned and ready to drink. A few things learned from this experience. Appearance - a touch darker and less light yellow than what I was aiming for in the Green Beacon Beer. Taste - The up-front hop flavour and aroma is amazing. The flavour is pretty much bang...

Returning to home brew after 20 years or so

Welcome! I can't speak to exactly what it was like 20 years ago but from everything I have read it has changed a great deal. I love AG brewing but it could be worth trying a few partial grain extracts with the modern ingredients and yeasts and seeing how you like it. I did a few of them before...

    Australian Wheat Ale Recipes?

Ok so bit of an update here. Tried the Brulosophy short and shoddy recipe with the hops discussed in the thread. Batch = 27L American Style Pale Malt - 3.5Kg Wheat - 3.5 kg Mash 30 mins at 66 deg 25 Minute Boil time - 20 IBU target Cascade 8g - 25 min Eclipse 15g - 15 min Eclipse 25g - 5 min...

    Ginger beer from scratch

There's a lot of discussion on this topic around the interwebs. Typically the active fermentation is done inside 7 days - there are those that advocate another 7 for the yeast to 'clean up' after itself by eating through some of the undesirable fermentation by-products. There's conflicting...

    Ginger beer from scratch

I've made a couple batches of all grain ginger beer - pale malt with a ton of caramel and toffee malt to add body and residual sweetness but it's still pretty dry. So I back-sweeten to taste. In the glass add a small amount of hot water then 1-1.5 teaspoons of sugar or honey (orange blossom...

    Australian Wheat Ale Recipes?

I got the ingredients to make a first pass based on the recipe I posted above along with the advice in the thread - once that is done and I've seen how it turns out I may well give this a go. It sounds great.

    Australian Wheat Ale Recipes?

I got curious and did a bit of looking - I reckon it was a Kwak that I had, and my brain just made it Kviek, though they are completely unrelated. I usually like belgian beers, but not Kwak.

    Australian Wheat Ale Recipes?

It was a kviek fermented beer (Def not a Kriek, which I do like) - just at a belgian beer cafe. It was a while ago - so maybe I am remembering wrong as well.

    Australian Wheat Ale Recipes?

Thanks for sharing this - particularly the Vic Secret pick on the yeast. I haven't used it before - so definitely wouldn't be able to pick it. Does this recipe land a little more noticeably on the barley malt side for the base given the 70% barley vs GB? I ask as I tried Four Pines' Aussie Wheat...

    Australian Wheat Ale Recipes?

Wow, that's an interesting one. I haven't used any Kviek yeast before - does it have a strong flavour? My only experience drinking a Kviek beer was many years ago, was at a beligian beer cafe and not to my tastes, but it sounds like this was a pretty great outcome. I'd probably up the wheat...
