Are these useful for brewing... or anything?

Old mini kegs from McDonalds, used for soft serve ice cream topping flavours I believe. One has a sticker on the side saying "Chocolate". The pickup tubes sit fairly loose - i.e. the white plastic caps lift easily. So I'm not sure how these things were sealed and pressurised? Volume about 4L...

    Little Ripper Sparkling Lager

Anyone tried this Matilda Bay small batch release? I'm keen to know if this is what I can expect a Vienna Lager to taste like, as I've never tasted one myself. I found it very sweet and malty (like malty honey). Nice at first, but not "sessionable" for me.

    DSGA Clarity

For those people not filtering, how does everyone find the clarity of this beer? This was the first AG I ever did back in 2009, and I can't really recall if the first one was cloudy or not. Now the second one I just did is quite cloudy. Pretty sure it's not yeast haze, because it was crash...

    BIAB dunk sparge efficiency benefits?

Hi guys, I've been out of brewing for a couple of years, but before my break it was popular to be doing a dunk sparge. I was doing it, and believed that my efficiency was better as a result. I've just been reading over on the BIABrewer forum that the increased efficiency from a separate dunk...

    Home Brewing In Australia Pre-legalisation

As we all know, home brewing beer was illegal in Australia until the early 1970's when the new Whitlam government changed the law. Well, my Dad has stories of his Dad brewing beer at home way back in the 1950's. Apparently the beer was pretty bad, but still did the job. Dad's father (my...

    Brissie Floods (object Found)

I saw a woman grab this object from the Brisbane River as it floated by in the recent floods. A lot of people were standing around, but nobody seemed to know what it was (including me). It was just a couple of hours after the river peaked, and what taken near the Riverside Centre in the city...

Poll: How Do You Manage Ph In Your Mash?

Having enough experience now to fairly confidently say that Fivestar pH5.2 stabiliser doesn't work as advertised (for me), I need to go to plan B in terms of managing pH in the mash. Just wondering what others do, and what is the most popular means.

Finally... Got My Local Water Report...redlands

After lots of phone calls and emails i finally got my local water report for the Redlands Shire. Here are the important bits (in mg/L): Na 24 Ca 15 Mg 4 HCO3 23 (bicarbonate) Cl 43 SO4 30 RA 0.0 The bicarbonate level is very low compared to the 100ppm of Brisbane water...

    Table Salt

Can't seem to get a clear answer as to why some brewers add table salt. Some add it to the mash, and others add it to the boil. Most seem to add about a teaspoon per 23L batch. I've found some suggestions that it makes the malt flavour more "rounded" - whatever that means. Seems to be used...

    Esb Too Sweet

Hi Guys, My most recent version of my house ESB came out a bit too sweet & full bodied for my liking. The differences from previous versions are as follows: 1) Mashed at 67 degrees rather than usual 65.5 degrees. 2) Added 4.5% caraaroma instead of usual 3.5%. 3) Ringwood Ale yeast attenuation...

    Bubbles In Beer Line

Guys, I can't quite track down the problem here, but as you can see from the photos below I'm getting gas bubbles in my beer line. The resulting problem is that I'm getting too much head on the first beer of each day (i.e. the bubbles disappear after the first pour of each session, but appear...

    60min Vs 90min Boil

I have done a bit of searching (probably not enough), and I still am not clear of the different results obtained by a 60min boil compared to a 90 mins boil. What's the difference? Could someone really tell the difference in a side by side test?

    Keg Burping & Hop Aroma

Guys, I've just kegged a brew for the first time. It was meant to be very hoppy, because I used a whole packet of Challenger hops (20gm @ 15min; 15gm @ 5min; 20gm cube hopped and the rest for bittering). However, I've got very little hop aroma or flavour. In fact the beer was a bit of a...

Zero Minute Hop Additions With Hopsock

I did an AG brew today, and I fear that I might have got the 0 min hops bit wrong (still learning the basics). I boil in a 40L Birko urn using a hop sock for the hops and no chill into a cube. Normally when I turn off the urn at the end of the boil I remove the hop sock, whirlpool, and then...

    Polyclar Didn't Work?

Used it for the first time...it didn't clear the chill haze! Followed all the directions (I think): added 5 grams to 20L beer (NS Summer Ale) in fermenter during crash chill at 2 degrees. I put the 5 grams into a small bottle of boiled water (about 200mls) and shook for 15 mins. Then added it...

Taste Difference Between Bottles - Ag

Guys, Now drinking my first AG beer, the famous Dr Smurto Golden Ale recipe, and it is very good. It has been bottled for 2.5 weeks now. The unusual thing is that I have bottled in both glass and PET and the taste difference between the two is very noticable. Almost like two different beers...
