    Research (james Squire)

Nice find Johnno. I would be good if I can authenticate it. Joseph Lycett only painted landscapes and botany as far as I can tell, but there were other artists. I must skite a little as I received an award for my efforts :D  And this is his post about it. It still needs some work, but...

Yes it is a bit unusual, but may have something to do with being an ex-convict. The other line of thought is that maybe he was painted, but no information was on the painting or know about the painting, thereby fading into obscurity.

    Research (james Squire)

Just to let you all know, I have added a wee bit more information, but had a bit of a rewrite. I found some information about him trying to sell his estate. I do have other information, like selling hops and thefts from his wharf, a convict absconding and him being a judge of Barley for other...

No problems about being pedantic, I have no idea, when it comes to botany, I just took for face value what was written, which I posted in verbatim.

    Research (james Squire)

There is another person that is sometimes acknowledged as Australia's first brewer and that was John Boston. But an article that I read recently (by David Hughes) believes he brewed, but not with hops or barley, but with Indian corn properly malted, and bittered with the leaves and stalks of the...

Thanx Ross. Gerard_M has PM'ed me with some information on plaques around Ryde and possibly a photo of ruins that is held by the Ryde Historic Society. I knew of them, but not of the picture they may have. More research for me to do, which is great.

Thanx for the compliment. As for recipes, I wish! I keep day dreaming, that I come across a forgotten diary at a garage sale :o! I still have a few things to chase up to add to the page, but the two major things missing are recipes and a picture of James. With him being as popular as he was...

I have not posted on this forum in quite a while , but thought I would post some information on my research project on James Squire and brewing during the convict period of Australia. Firstly James Squire. I have created a Wikipedia page on James Squire recently. Yes you may say that there is...

    My Education Into Beer Appreciation

The better half is home and just in time to try the Konig Ludwig. She seemed to like it. Moved on to the white Chimay. Reminds me of Duvel, but with one hell of a punch 8% (Blue knocked my socks off at 9.2%). Jude thinks this beer has similar characteristics to the red. I personally prefer the red.

    My Education Into Beer Appreciation

6 more beers to try. Starting with the Konig Ludwig Weissbier and at only $3.80 (IIRC) for a 500mL bottle it is a steal. Funnily enough it taste very similar to my wheat beer that I made with Cascade spicy ghost, 1Kg of wheat DME and K92. Typical wheat aroma and fruity/bubblegum notes.

    What Could This Be?

As you can see in my sig, this brew was using W34/70 and this is my first lager style of beer. I didn't have my mashmaster started but temps were 10~12*C through out the fermentation stage. Mashmaster now running and laagering at 1*C

    What Could This Be?

I have a extract pils that I have just racked and moved into lagering stage, but when I opened the lid this stuff was floating on the top. It appears slimey. There seems to be no off smell, so I was wondering if it is just hops. Any ideas?

    A Piece Of History

Well we know where James got his hop supply. HMS Porpoise 1798 Sir Joseph Banks, under instructions from the Lords Commissioners of the Treasury on 22 June 1798, arranged a selection of culinary and medicinal plants, fruit trees and vines, plants for fodder, trees for timber, hops for brewing...
