    Quick Oats - usage

Hey Brewers, Wondering if I could use Quick / unmalted Oats as part of the base. 75% ale malt and the rest - quick oats, will I get reasonable sugars from this?

    Bottling brew re-visited

I've been kegging for a while now, however considering doing a odd batch just to bottle (PET bottles). Don't want to overcomplicate this process, so I'll be brewing non-pressure and bottling ("transferring") with a wand - looking at a sst version. My other option is to attach a line to the...

SST Pluto Gun - spare parts / seal

After serving me many batches of brew, my Pluto gun has developed "incontinence" - pulled it apart for a clean, but no joy. Is the nozzle seal (or the stem assembly) available as a spare part or can be replaced / repaired somehow? Thanks :)

    S-129 Saison

Hey Brewers, I typically brew AG / BIAB SMASH using W34-70 in winter and US-05 or S-04 summer time, usually happy with the malt-forward session brews this combination produces. However, I'm tempted to use the same malt (base Ale) & hops (Simcoe) and ferment with S-129. Am I to expect a taste...

    High initial wort temp

Short story: pitched S-04 @ ~30C, 28L batch @ 1.040 in the evening and cooled overnight down to 20. Pressure set to 20PSI later in the day. Didn't expect the yeast to fire up so quickly so now I'm a bit nervous about esters / fusel alcohols... Some conflicting info re: esters & warm wort early...

First BIAB AG attempt - partial success?

Hey Brewers, Surely this has been done to death before but for the life of me I cannot work out the projected vs measured SG. So, 5kg Red X (similar potency of a generic Ale malt 1.036), shoved in an urn @ 71C & 25L and removed 75mins later at 65C. The grain bag is then "cold sparged" - ie...

Urn power - electrical safety question pls

Hey Brewers, Just recently purchased a new Urn for BIAB, it's advertised as 2,500W but the manual states it's 3,000W - which would be over the limit for a typical residential 10Amp outlet. So, I went to check and measured element's resistance @ the plug end, which is around 17Ohm, meaning the...

BIAB with chill overnight in the "kettle" (not cube)

Hey Brewers, Would chilling wort overnight in the kettle pose any problems if the kettle is sealed? I'm thinking getting a 35L SST Milk Can, which is gasket - sealed, meaning a very minimal risk of infection overnight compared to a typical stock pot: To be powered by the 2200W element...

Just curious what's the strain of the 5g yeast supplied with the MJ Irish Stout can? Thanks!

    Antique Kegs - SE MEL

I have two kegs circa 70's up for sale. I got them with the intention to make a boil kettle but decided to take another approach. Both are in VGC, one is confirmed as a Tooth 18 Gal and the other is Mytton of of unknown (to me) capacity but it's big - as per comparison pic of the two. Both have...

No Chill - in a Fermenter?

Just researching gear and techniques for BIAB / No Chill methods - is it an option at all to use Coppers Fermenter (non airlock model) instead of Cubes? The idea is: 1) Make wort, transfer while still >85C to Fermenter (26L), put the lid on and let it cool overnight 2) If using new Yeast -...

Keg ID / potential use of please?

This beauty was destined for the tip, but fortunately instead gifted to me... It looks like it's been used as home made wine barrel (came with a silicone bung and tap), and is clean and in good nick, but I'm struggling to figure out as to how it could be of benefit for the golden brew? Perhaps...

BIAB Mash Time and Boil Time (noob warning)

I'm planning on another partial BIAB batch, just wanted to clarify - would it be ok to leave the esky for a couple of hours mashing? From what I've read, BIAB mash time is between 40 and 90 minutes (I've been doing 70 minutes) - would any longer have an ill effect? Also, these batches being...

What is this "recipe" close to? (Noob question)

I've never made a batch per recipe, and the next one is no different. I'm however, interested what you'd make of this concoction, or what would it be close to: BIAB: Ale Malt 1.5kg + Munich 1kg + CaraAroma 200g Magnum 10g @ 60 + Hallertauer MF 35g @ 10 Coopers Lager can 1.7kg (should add about...

Collecting & reusing Ale Yeast (noob question warning)

Hey Brewers, I've done a few batches reusing W-34/70 - they've all turned out well and collecting this yeast with Fermentasaurus is easy as. However, I'm about to do a batch with US-05, which is an Ale / top dweller; Does this mean the bottom will just end up with dead yeast cells and the new /...

    CO2 Re-fills around Dandenong

I've emptied my KK 2.6kg CO2 Cylinder and need to refill it... I really don't want to swap a brand new Cylinder for another one that could be used / abused or much older and due for testing. Are there any any places around Dandy or Clayton that would do a re-fill (not swap)? Triple J - swap...

    Additives / Adjuncts question

Hey Brewers, Would you use these as flavourings in a recpie? The Choc cream might go well in a Stout - like brew? They smell awesome but wonder if / how these would translate in brew (added late / at flame out)? Cheers!
