    Old Hops

Hey I've got a couple unopened bags of hops that have been sitting in my fridge for about 18 months. I understand the alpha acid content will be substantially less, but will they still be good to use for late additions? I'm not sure if hops can go off. David.

Thoughts & Questions About Fermenting & Conditioning Beer

Thanks for your advice guys. I pitched two packets of re hydrated us05 and both were well within date. I guess I took it off the primary too early, which is further evidenced by my second brew which I've just kegged. It sat on the primary for 3 weeks and had reached its FG after about 10 of...

Thoughts & Questions About Fermenting & Conditioning Beer

Hey guys, brewed my first after a long lay off about a month ago and it has raised a few questions for me. For perspective it was an ale brewed with us05 and was left in my wardrobe. The brew stayed between 15 - 18 degrees the entire time but since I didn't bother using my fermentation fridge...

    Disinfecting A Keg

This sounds like a plan. Thanks for you advice guys. It's great to get other heads involved. I'd hate to lose this one, since it's my first in a while.

    Disinfecting A Keg

Hey people I've got a particular keg, which had an infected beer in it last. It's been 12 months since then and I'm planning on using it again. My plan it to clean it first then soak it in an Iodophor solution and while doing that, run a bit of the solution through the beer line and tap. Leave...

    Musical Equipment Porn!

Correct, it's a Tiny Terror. Great little amp that nails the classic rock sort of sound. It's versatility ends there unfortunately, but I love what it does. Can also be picked up very cheap these days as well. Dave.

    Beer Prices Over The Top?

Last time I checked them at my local Dan Murphy's, they were $45 I think, but I'm sure I could find plenty of places that would sell them for similar prices to what you paid. It's one of the main reasons I got into home brewing in the first place. That and the excitement of making it yourself.

    Musical Equipment Porn!

Out of curiosity is anyone on this forum also a part of AGGH? I used to be on here every day a few years ago, and this site always had a similar culture to there. Easy going and helpful people. To try and keep this Off Topic thread on topic, here are the two I'm currently playing at the moment...

    Aussie Fwk With S05

Hey everyone, putting a brew down for the first time in over a year for the gf's birthday party. I don't trust the my grain that has been sitting around for so long so I bought one of those Aussie Pale Ale FWK's. Does anyone know what to expect from these ones? I used two packets of...

    So Gooood

Congrats Blackapple, enjoy the beer and the knowledge that you created it and will subsequently destroy it. Dave.

    Proposed Pils Extract Recipe

Looks good with the revised hop schedule Stef. Some people will argue that the crystal is not correct for the style, but I've brewed a few pilsners with small amounts of medium crystal and found it works ok. Make sure you record the final recipe you end up using and take notes on how it comes...

    Muntons Gold?

    Yes.

    Muntons Gold?

I've found the muntons yeast to be very good in bitters, milds, porters and stouts. As long as the temp is kept in check, it'll only impart a very subtle (nice in my opinion) flavour to the beer. Though I've noticed it doesn't handle cold temps too well and can go to sleep pretty easy when below...

    Appin Ale

Hey MCT do you have an idea when the catholic club will be serving the beers. This is exciting news for me. Dave.

    Minimalist Porter Recipe

Thanks Razz, I think that will probably be my plan of attack. Not sure what to expect of it, but part of the fun I guess. I am going to try to get from work to the brewshop before they close, just have to wait and see.

    Minimalist Porter Recipe

Hey everyone I've been away from brewing for a bit over 12 months now. Been meaning to get back into it for awhile and have finally managed it. Brewed a Pale Ale a couple of days ago and am now planning a brown porter. My issue is this, I normally use base, medium crystal and chocolate in...

Do Bubbles Mean I Have An Infection?

Best indication that a wild yeast got in there would be if some type of krausen had formed. Either way it's unlikely and I would of pitched the yeast anyway. Worst case scenario, you've made a lambic, but from the sounds of things I think it should be fine. Best of luck, Dave.

    Coopers English Bitter

Yes, as yeast eats the sugars in your wort they produce alcohol and carbon dioxide. So the more sugars -> the more alcohol. Heres a simple calculator you can use to help work the effects on alcohol of additional sugar. Some people like to dry hop right at the start of fermentation, some...

    Little Creatures Bright Ale

Neill you might be better off keeping your boil the same time length and just increase your final hop additions for a more intense flavour and aroma. No point using more hops than you need to. If your worried about it being too bitter, decrease your initial hop addition a little. All the...

    Basic Q - Bottle Conditioning

I don't personally find it that important what temp you bottle condition your beers at myself. Whether its an ale or lager yeast, as long as its warm enough for your yeasties to do their job properly. My reasoning being that it's a relatively small amount of fermentables that your adding at...
