Melbourne Brewers Beerfest - Call for Judges & Stewards

Hi Brewers, while most of you are working your way through Chrissie parties with nary a thought to what will happen to you beyond the end of this month, cast your mind forward to mid February next year when the Melbourne Brewers will yet again be hosting BEERFEST at the Grand Ridge Brewery in...

    Competitions for 2014 - Melb / Vic

Most of these are british ales, and these have been removed from the Beerfest lineup this year - mainly because they are generally included in the Brit Beerfest comp we run in May, so it was duplication for us. Dunno if we have ever included American wheat - if we did it may have been...

2013 Sodium Perc / Met BB - Melbourne

Ooh yes - I want some of this action. So a 1/2 bag of Perc plus 1/4 bag of Met(asilicate) will make me about 18kg of magic powder, which should see me into the next lifetime (if I don't turn into even more of a clean freak). Thanks heaps for doing this Yob Perc Bag No 1: 1 bag = (Yob 1/2...

    Fv fridge temps

Hmmm. (sorry for the late reply - I'm not on here much anymore) So when you say you get an accurate temp by insulating the probe against the wall are you - like most brewers - just assuming its accurate or have you compared the measurement to a calibrated temperature probe in the wort? I think...

How Many Fridges Have You Got?

I've tried to be super-efficient so I store a few bottles in the kitchen fridge (that counts as one) and use a modified bar fridge for fermentation - thats barely 2. But I do need to scale up my fermentaion setup so I need another one; anyone in Melbourne chucking one out?

    Melbourne Brewers Beerfest, 2013

Sorry ferg, lacked a bit of subtlety - put it down to me being tired. Basically I read your post and was thinking to myself "so what's different for us?". It's not really that far for a Saturday outing, and loads of us have small families too (including me). Just niggles a bit since a lot of us...

    Melbourne Brewers Beerfest, 2013

Can I suggest you add a little cement to your next mash - it might help you to harden up.

Melb/Vic bulk buy sodium percarbonate-per KG.

Ahh ding-dang-diddly-crap, log on to AHB maybe once in 6 months, looking for sodium perc and I missed it. Oh well, maybe I'll just go buy some more.

    Throw Out Your Cubes

Am currently working up a recipe for a dry botched IPA that I may do for the club dinner later this year. Where would I find the most reliable source of the botch? - D'you reckon I could just take samples of the potato salad from a local salad bar or should I go to a kebab place in Nicholson street?

Beerfest 2012 Is Upon Us! 10th-11th Feb 2012. Entries Now Open&#33

I'd like to follow up Andy's post with a big thanks to all the volunteers who make BEERFEST possible. A great turn out and effort from the many judges and stewards! Wolfy did an outstanding job as our chief steward - worth a special mention. We also had quite a few new judges willing to have a...

    Fermentor Infection, Sh*t

I hear your pain MJ - I've had a similar problem affecting about half of my brews for the last couple of years. It's fairly mild; a medicinal/solventy note in the aroma and flavour but its bloody persistent, and yeah - after a while you start to think it would be easier to just buy beer. I've...

    Throw Out Your Cubes

Jeez, just logged on to AHB to soak up some time waiting for a plane - but after reading this I think I'll go back to staring out the window...

    Batch Sparging What Temperature

Like you I use mash water about 10 deg high at mash in (my spreadsheet gives me the exact temp for my system based on the grain temp), but I heat up my HLT to somewhere around 85 deg for sparging. This brings up the temp in stages when you batch sparge. So if you're mashing at say 67, the first...

    3787 Starter Sulfur

Actually sulphur isn't a sign of stressed yeast - its a normal byproduct and can be more or less depending on the wort and the yeast strain. I'd trust your instincts on the taste of the starter beer; particularly since I know this yeast and saying it's strange would be an understatement (and...

    Beerfest 2012 Judging And Stewarding

Should be in a psoition to update the judge roster on the Melbourne Brewers site soon - big thanks to all those who've volunteered so far. And once again its a big turnout for first-timers! I do love the line, "Hi Rich, I've never judged before but I thought I'd give it a go..." This state...

Is It Too Late To Drop Some Aroma Hops Into A Fermenter After Pitching

I think you get the picture - most are saying you're actually too early! I tend to agree with them; I add dry hops after about 4 days, and depending on hops, yeast, etc you'll find you get awesome aroma. A completely different beer.

    Throw Out Your Cubes

Well, I started out using a chiller, then convinced myself I needed to go no-chill for a couple of years (mainly because of the drought - remember that?), and recently went back to chilling as now I have a tank. So FWIW I have practical experience of both, and being pretty keen on competition I...

    Choc Mint Porter

I disapprove of your choice of beer, but will defend to the death your right to brew it.
