    Rye Caramel Vs Brown Malt

I didn't get so much of the peppery peppery but some spice and roasty too with some nice bread-like notes. Adds some real complexity to the finish - did an english bitter where I paired it with carared for the crystal malts and it just blew my mind. Didn't taste like a 3.7% beer at all.

    Pommie Pressure Barrel

I used to have something like that which I had to abandon when I came to Aus. Mine had a float to carry the outlet pipe which sat on top of the beer so you were always getting beer from the top of the barrel where it was clearest. This served the best home brewed bitters and gave a very...

    Biab - Chilling

Hi Folks I've decided to make the switch to BIAB with an urn after about 2 yrs of extract brewing (& about 17 K & K before that). I have very limited space in my apartment and no outside tap on what is quite a big balcony. The big problem I can see moving to this is how the heck am I going to...

    Things Are Bad In Blighty

CAMRA has a slightly different take on things: http://www.camra.org.uk/page.aspx?o=whatsnew3 Last time I was back in blighty I went to the 30th anniversary of the Good Beer show. It was rammed to the rafters, even in a new bigger venue with lots of under 35s as well as the normal age groups...

Help With Muntons Gold Higland Heavy Ale Kit

+1 for do it as is. I've made loads of the Muntons kits before I started messing about with spercialty grain & extract and they are all nicely balanced just the way they are. A tip though is that to get the absolute best flavour from them if you are bottling is to leave it a good long time to...

    Crystal Rye!

I did a quick 'n' dirty English Bitter extract recipe with 1 can pale & 1 can amber LME (Morgans unhopped) put in 250g Cararoma, 250g Crystal, and critically 250g rye crystal. Hops were a bit varied - Challenger, Target and Northdown timings were a bit varied, I didn't have a great deal of time...

    Record Keeping

I use the Google Docs applications as this hosts the spreadsheet online and means I can access and edit from more or less any computer connected to the internet without needing to be sat at my home computer (does need you to sign up with google though, but if you've got a gmail account you're...

    Sugar In Belgians

Golden Syrup off the supermarket shelf is invert sugar in a small amount of water (20% ish?). I'm going to give this a go next time out.

    Sedex Thingy

I know, it's just a toy to keep me amused! I do get the point of a 2 part system, honest! What I was really wondering is whether you could use it as a disengorgement tool for speciality brews. There was one listed on here a while ago that had this champagne like aging. I was wondering if it...

    Wb-06

Mine got above that I suspect and had the same thing! It seems to have settled a bit with age but bottles have dropped absolutely crystal clear (about 12 weeks since bottling). I've been rolling them along the counter top to get a little of the yeast back in to it.

    Sedex Thingy

I bought 6 of these out of curiosity the other day. Thought I'd have a play with them and see if they're any good. Thought they might be good for high gravity beers, barley wines etc. that you want to keep long term. Get them to the point where the majority of the bottle conditioning has taken...

    You Know You're A Homebrewer If . . .

#41 - If you buy beer according to ease of label removal or the type of bottle it comes in. Guilty of that on more than one occasion. It's now spread to pinching the mineral water bottles from work!

    Wb-06

The temp range on this yeast is pretty wide, I reckon you'll be okay down to about 10 C, it'll probably slow down but no harm done. I used this yeast recently and fermented it warm after reading about the strain on here (do some searching around and you'll find a long thread on it). I got lots...

    Brew Infection, Who's Had It?

I'd love to ferment in glass but I don't quite trust myself with it and have very limited space so it needs to be stackable etc. but now you've got me thinking about buying some new toys... Actually thinking about what I did it was probably the fact that I didn't keep the gelatine...

    Brew Infection, Who's Had It?

Got one right now. 30l of APA :( out it goes. Never had this problem with fermenters that didn't have taps. They're a bugger to clean, I'm probably going to chuck 'em and loof for something better...

    Best Kit Ever

Right there with you. Drinking a variation on this right now. Didn't use the recomended yeast or the one that came with but used WB-06 and fermented well above recomended temps and used 2 of ESB's light grain improver packs with a shedload of leftover US Northern Brewer Hops boiled with the...
