    Dry Yeast Cell Count

I am going to do a high gravity brew this weekend (OG = 1.106). I normally use liquid yeast and build up starters according to the calculated viability of the pack by the manufactured date. For this brew I am going to use S05 as I figured it will be easier and cheaper to get the required...

Am I Burning Out My Stir Plate?

I made a stir plate a while back. Seems to work pretty well, i get a good stiring motion with a nice dimple on top. My problem is that after running for a few hours I can smell the motor, smells like it might be burning out or somthing. I want to fix it, but I'm not sure if I should replace...

    Clumping Yeast

I made a yeast starter with a stir plate with Wyeast 1968 London ESB and all the yeast has seemed to clump up. I have never seen this before. I didn't think too much of it and pitched them in this morning. All the clumps of yeast are now sitting at the bottom of the fermenter, which doens't...

    Pumps

Anyone tried pumps like these? link Seems like they would work, hell of a lot cheaper than a March pump. I guess the problem might be that I don't think it's a magnetic drive, although there are three speeds you can adjust it to. What are your thoughts?

    Rye Esb

I'm thinking about trying a littel Rye in an ESB. I don't want too much Rye, just enought to add some more body and sweetness. Anyone tried this before? I'm thinking 87 % Marris Otter 10% Rye malt 3 % caraaroma Other option is to add some cararye, although I don't know what this would...

    Inverting Sugar In Wort

Hi all, I'm going to make a Belgian Golden Strong Ale, and want a OG of around 1.80. My question is in regard to using table sugar instead of candy sugar, mainly because I'm lazy and couldn't be bothered making my own. I know to make candy sugar you need to heat table sugar in an acidic...

Hop Plants After Harvest And Moving Home

Hi all, I have to move home pretty soon and am in a bit of a predicament with my hop plants (Chinook and Cascade), both of which are in pot plants. Firstly, the Chinook primed pretty early and I picked the last of the cones this morning (there is only a handful of green ones left). Would I...

    Yeast Starter Final Gravity

I've been working on my first yeast stater. It's been slowly bubling away at around 23C for 36 hrs. I took a SG reading and its only down to 1.030 from 1.040. What does this mean, should I wait longer (It doesn't seem to be fermenting much any more), should I just use it as is, is my yeast...

Yeast Starter And Wort Volume Compensation

Hi all, I had a quick search for this but didn't come up with much. I normally brew relatively low gravity beers, and haven't seen the need for making a yeast starter....until now. I'm going to brew an Imperial IPA, and have done all the calculations to figure out the pitching rate I require...

    What Went Wrong?

Hi all, I brewed up a Weizen today, pretty close to this recipe linky I have been brewing all grain for quite a while now, and have been getting my final gravities pretty spot on based on the efficiency of my system (80%). This is the recipe I put down, I hit all temperatures in the mash...

Joe White Pilsner Vs Weyermann Pilsner

I know there have been similar discussions to this in the past, and that most of the time the differences between malt brands are minimal. I'm normally happy using Joe White base malts as the results always turn out great, however I'm brewing a Pilsner this weekend and was wondering if there is...

    Wine Cooler As Fermenter Fridge

I was in Target the other day and spotted a wine fridge for $90 bucks! It looked about the perfect size for a fermenter. Does anyone use one of these? Anyone know what the temperature range for the thermostat is?

    Saaz B Or Summer Saaz

G'day everyone. I'm working on a Pilsner recipee, and I wan't to use a different variety of Saaz, just to give it a bit of an extra fruity boost than normal Saaz hops. I'm tossing up between Summer Saaz and Saaz B. I haven't used either before, has anyone tried both of these? Which one do you...

How Do You Condition Your Beer?

I have a question about conditioning ales. My obvious thought is that they should be conditioned at room temperature. Is there any advantage to conditioning ales at cooler temperatures? What conditioning techniques do you use? I always do secondary fermentation for 1-2weeks, but am never...

    Mango Hops

Guys, I remember trying Saint Anou Pale Ale at a bar on Brunswick St probably five years ago. We used to go there just to get a glass of "Mango beer". Years later I'm much wiser, no they didn't put mango in the beer! My question is what hops give that great mango flavour and aroma. I haven't...

    Epic Pale Ale Clone

I've done a search on this and came up with nothing. Who out there has tried Epic Pale Ale? Amazing beer with a crazy amount of hops in it, and I want to try and make a version of my own. The claim is that they use 15.4 hop flowers per bottle or 3000 percent more than the average beer! WTF...

    Keg Won't Carbonate!

I'm a bit stumped about this one. I brewed a Belgian Double a while back and hooked it up to gas and chilled it a couple of weeks ago. It been sitting at 83kPa, 5C for the whole time and it hasn't carbonated yet. Anyone know what the could be causeing this. My gas isn't leaking. When I pull...

    Lots And Lots Of Head

Hi Everyone, I have finally got my kegging setup up and running. I am having a little trouble with pouring the beer, and always end up with too much head (up to 3/4 of a glass). Yes, I have tryed turning the CO2 down, and no that doesn't seem to help....and I have associated concerns with...
