    Freshly opened hop aroma

How did that turn out? I've been putting 100-200g of Cascade flowers in my kegs recently and have been blown away by the aroma. I have home grown flowers which I put in a BIAB bag and dump that in the keg. Then I shake the keg every morning for 4 or 5 days to get as much beer in contact with the...

    Mountain Top Brew Fest

Will the results be published anywhere? I'd be interested to see which beers got the most votes. There was some very nice brews there yesterday!

    2018 Hop Plantations

Perhaps it's because your days in Brisbane are quite short at the moment (12.5 hours), and short days trigger flowering. Apparently in short day areas, once a certain number of nodes have developed, flowering will occur...

    2018 Hop Plantations

They're looking about the same for me in Monbulk. The one Cascade I put in the ground already sprouted a week or so ago (I thought the ones in the pots would sprout first as the soil would warm quicker). These are both second year plants.

2017 Hop Plantations, Show Us Your Hop Garden!

My Chinook is sprouting a few laterals, no signs of flowers yet though. I've been training it daily to grow horizontally. The one day I didn't, a bine grew up to the hot tin roof which burnt the head right off. Hops frame the view from my bedroom window now which is nice!

    Will this work?

Hi, I'm about to brew an all grain SMaSH this week with Maris Otter and Cascade, BIAB in my 40L urn. My problem is I want to add most of my hops in the last 5 minutes and don't have a wort chiller to cool my wort quick enough. My plan is to mash in around 22L and aim for 14L of high gravity...

2017 Hop Plantations, Show Us Your Hop Garden!

My hops have picked up now. The chinook is taller than me, hard to believe that's just 1 months worth of growth.

2017 Hop Plantations, Show Us Your Hop Garden!

Thanks Belgrave Brewer, They are both in a potting mix for vegies. I had previously given them some seaweed fertiliser that was high in N but not much else, so I got some Yates Thrive today which has a bit of everything in it and gave them some of that.

2017 Hop Plantations, Show Us Your Hop Garden!

This is my first year growing hops and it looks like mine are lagging behind a bit. Pic 1 is a Cascade which I got from Diggers club towards the end of last year, it died back to the rhizome almost as soon as I got it home. It wasn't doing much until about a week ago but has shot up since then...

    Filtering hops at bottling time

To follow this up, cold crashing and angling the fermenter worked a treat. I missed out on the last 2 or 3 liters because every time I tilted the fermenter forward hops blocked the tap. It's tasting real good after 2 weeks in the bottle.

    Filtering hops at bottling time

I did think of that! I was thinking of using a sanitised food grade plastic hose to transfer from one fermenter to another, and holding a sanitised nylon mesh bag (which I normally use for steeping grains) over the end of the hose to strain out the hops.

    Filtering hops at bottling time

Thanks for the replies, I did boil the hops before adding to the fermenter. I didn't strain them only because it hasn't been an issue for me before, but I think from now on I will. I haven't cold crashed before, but my fermenter is in a temp controlled fridge so I may as well give it a go and...

    Filtering hops at bottling time

Hi, I've got my third batch fermenting at the moment, I've done a coffee porter with a few different grains and East Kent Goldings hops. It's a week in to fermentation now and I took a hydrometer sample yesterday. It tasted good but was FULL of little bits of hops. In my two previous brews I...

    Just did my first brew

I just opened one of these brews. It hasn't quite been 2 weeks in bottles but I couldn't help myself. It tastes and smells a tiny bit sweet and yeasty (is that the 'green' flavour?), other than that though I'm wrapped with it! It has a nice big body and tasted quite hoppy. I don't get the hop...

    Just did my first brew

Thanks for the ideas! I do have a small salad crisper compartment at the bottom of the fridge so I will keep my eyes peeled for a small heater or lamp. It was cold yesterday and a bowl of boiling water with a plate on top placed in the bottom of the fridge took the temp from 17.2 to 19.1 - a...

    Just did my first brew

Hi Dave, Thanks for the advice. The test glass for the probe is an awesome idea! I bottled my brew yesterday and I've been wondering about the probe (currently in open air among all the bottles). I got a half bottle at the very end which I capped because I thought I may as well, I'll crack it...

    Just did my first brew

Thanks for the replies, I've used a sponge (brand new) to act as insulation and taped it to the fermenter. Seems to be doing the job as it is taking a long time to chill from 24 to 19, but it's getting there. I haven't got a heating device at all, I'm just hoping temps don't get too cold over...

    Just did my first brew

Hi, I'm from the Dandenong Ranges east of Melbourne. I have been wanting to home brew for a while and have been slowly collecting bits and pieces until now I have everything I need! This forum has been SO helpful for gathering information. I love my hops.. IPA's and American style pale ales...
