Hi, I'm planning to brew this recipe on the weekend. Any tips from no chillers for adjustments? I was planning to keep 60 min addition as is, Change 30min addition to 15min and cube hop with the 5 min hops. Any thoughts on this?

    Reusing yeast cake for RIS

Hi, I am planning to brew a 1.100 OG RIS this weekend using the entire yeast cake from a 1052 OG Pale Ale. The yeast was in primary fermenter for 2 weeks, then transferred to a large erlenmeyer flask and covered with plastic wrap and refrigerated for 2 weeks (I planned to brew straight away...

    Frozen yeast starter HELP!

Just pulled my yeast starter from the fridge where it has been chilling. The thing was frozen! I gave it a shake and the ice broke, so I don't think it has gone far below 0 and not for too long. Is it safe to use it? If no I need to wait until Monday to get more yeast. I have it out warming...

    Re pitched yeast under attenuating

Hi, I have brewed 2 batches of beer with American Ale yeast (Danny's favourite) re pitched from a previous batch. I expected 1010 - 1012 in less than 1 week, but after 10 days 1 is 1022 and the other is 1026. This is after several days at 21c, so fermentation should be well and truly done. I do...

    Chilli Ale no secondary

Hi All, I am going to brew a Chilli Ale on the weekend (Pale ale with chilli added after primary fermentation). I am following a recipe for this one, which states to ferment ale in primary then rack onto chilli in secondary. Is there any reason not to just put chillis straight into primary...

    Ghetto Grain Mill

Ok, I don't have great woodworking skills, but I still had a shot at it... My 18V cordless drill is a bit short on horsepower for this.... I had to put onto high setting and partly squeeze trigger to turn at low RPM. What do you think of my crush? I have it set at a little over 1mm gap.

    Ale chilled too long

Hi, I have 2 American ales that I fermented out, conditioned at fermentation temp for 1 week then ramped down to 7 degC. It has been at this temp for 16 days as I haven't got around to bottling. Do you think that there is a risk that too much yeast has dropped from suspension?

Are my hops still good to use?

Hi AHB'ers, I normally keep all of my hops in vacuum packs in the freezer, but after moving house I accidentally left a vacuum pack of cascade pellets in a turned off freezer for about 1 month. I am guessing that the temp would have been around 30degC. Do you think that these are still good...

    Malt Muncher Grain Mill

Is anybody using the Malt Muncher Grain mill (for sale on ebay) I have seen it on Ali express for $100 Inc shipping? It is much cheaper than Barley Crusher ($270 without hopper). Was wondering if it is worth the extra expense. http://m.aliexpress.com/item/1445920793.html '>...

    60% efficiency batch sparge ok?

Hi, I am mashing in a 50L Eski with a copper manifold, batch sparging. My mash is always 65-66degC, pH 5.2 - 5.5. Drop in temp typically 2-3 degC I reliably hit pre boil gravity that correlates to 60% efficiency according to Beersmith. Does this sound reasonable? I do not want to fly sparge...

    Barleywine - mashing in a 50L cooler

Hi Fellow AHB'ers, I'm itching to try my hand at a barley wine, but the more I read, the more daunting it sounds. Does anybody have experience with doing a Barley wine in a 50L cooler? I have a recipe for Stone Old Guardian (OG = ~1.10, ABV ~10%). The recipe is to mash in a kettle with a...

I am looking at getting a 400x microscope for yeast cell counting. Prices range from about $50 for a cheap USB microscope to well over $1000. Has anybody got a cheap microscope that does the job for counting yeast cells?

Missed out 1/2 my grain.... UGH!

Just finishing boil of a Stone Smoked Porter Clone. Everything was ok.. mash temp, ph, etc but my preboil gravity was 1/2 expected (design 1.051SG / measured 1.027). I get my grain in packs of 4 precrushed from my LHBS. Just realised that they were all 1 pack EXCEPT my Smoked Porter. A...

    Coopers Yeast

I've made a Coopers Pale Ale and a Coopers Sparkling Ale using the respective bottles to obtain my yeast. I was wondering if they're both the same yeast strain? It works out to be a great deal - you pay about $4 for a long neck of beer, a nice sturdy bottle and the yeast to make a true to...

    Making Ag Equipment.

I am keen to start all grain brewing, but the initial outlay is a bit daunting. Does anyone know of sights with designs for the different pieces of equipment required for this? I'm sure a lot of the stuff can be built with a little inspiration, mechanical inclination and solid guidance, but I...

    Replacing Grains With Malt?

I'm fairly new to brewing (currently at the point of using kits plus hops and some grain). I have found that most homebrew recipes on the net are all grain. I was wondering if these can be replaced with liquid malt extracts? If so, how much malt extract do you need for a given amount of...
