Save the ales this earth hour

‘Save the Ales’ as part of Earth Hour campaign. In a 2014 study published to the Journal of Cereal Science, University of Queensland researcher Peter Gous warned that climate change could affect the amount and quality of starch found in barley, which, when malted, is a major ingredient in beer...

    Keg o-rings, where to buy?

    Vienna Lager attempt

As discussed in the "what are you brewing 2015" thread, I decided to attempt my first lager after getting an old fridge. There was some debate about whether I used too much caraaroma. I did do the brew exactly as I originally formulated. See recipe pick below. I put it in the fermenter and...

Help with new brew rig ideas......

SWMBO and sprogs bought me a 60L urn for Xmas from keg king. It has a ball valve already installed and I will have a sparky sort out a 15A for me. I have been all graining for a while now using a 30L Birko and have been VERY happy with the results. My main issue was time and only being able to...

    Final gravity higher than expected

Just kegging an Irish red ale for Xmas. It finished at 1.016, expected through beersmith was 1.013. I know that my mash temp was closer to 70oC than 66oC. Would that account for the higher FG? This would also suggest a bigger bodied beer? It's the " better red then dead" recipe from the DB.

Kirin: first pressed beer... Explain that!

Had one of these after work yesterday. I think it is a larger and was a pretty standard catpiss beer... I though pressing was for BIABers and olive oil. Just a marketing ploy?

    Is your beer vegan?

Came across this article about a Vegan Oktoberfest. I am a carnivore myself but found it interesting. https://www.finedininglovers.com/stories/vegan-beer-list-festival/ I use gelatin occasionally so I assume that rules out that beer from being vegan. Isinglass, pepsin and cochineal would also...

    Heated Stir Plate

Got my hands on this heated stirplate. Anyone use a heated stir plate? This has a scale that starts at 50oC but the is a long gap between off and 50oC. Is it worth trying to get it to sit at 20oC or so or just go with ambient room temp for a yeast starter? Thanks Beercus

    Same grain bill hop experiment

I started doing some SMaSH's and was not a big fan of the just base malt, so to do some comparisons of hops i would like to use the same grain bill and then change the hops. I will cube all hops (no hops in boil, no chill). In Beersmith I have added the hops in as a 20min boil to get an...
