Forgot to perg keg before shake carbonation

Title pretty much says it. After filling my keg I forgot to purge the head space and began to force carb via the shaking method. So I assume I have a fair bit of DO in the beer now (I did not purge the keg before filling either). Should I either 1) just drink it quickly before the major...

    Gladfield Redback malt

I picked up some of this the other day to try out. Who has use this malt? What flavour does it give and what amounts have people been using? What type of beers? The description from the maltster "Red Back Malt is also a unique malt made by Gladfield. It is prepared by a special process before...

    Lift to pale ale manier?

Hey guys, Is anyone going to Pale ale manier, that has a spare seat in their car? Unfortunately my lift had something come up and has had to pull out. Normally it would not matter, but the missus is taking the car away tonight. I am pretty keen to enter a couple of beers into the comp and I...

90 min boil on BB pale?

I picked up a sack of Barrett Burston Pale in a bulk buy recently. Is it recommended to do a 90 min boil to reduce DMS with this malt as it is with pilsner?

Calculation of IBU additions after flame out (no chill/whirlpool)

After a fair bit of reading and playing around I have done some work on how to calculate IBUs after flame out. Attached is an article outlining what I have done. Hopefully some of you actually read it and can offer some thoughts. If anyone has any questions I am happy to answer them.

    Cube hopping with whole hops

I have kindly been given a fair amount of hops from this years harvest from a friend. The hops have been dried and vacuum sealed and seem in good order. I want to use them in some hoppy APA styles but I am a no chiller. I have been cube hopping with pellets a lot and have had great success. I...

    Dry Hop with Perle?

Anyone ever dry hoped with perle before? I currently have an American style Red ale fermenting away and used some perle for bittering as well as a flavor addition. I am using Simco and citra for flavour/aroma as well but was thinking about chucking a bit of the perle in as well.

    Irish red ale yeast

Just wondering what yeast people recommend for an Irish red ale? I was planning on using either WLP 004 (Irish Ale) or Wyeast 1084 (Irish ale) but my LHBS is currently out of stock of them. I currently have a few that I think might be suitable Wyeast 1056 (american ale) Wyeast 1028 (London Ale)...

Free open course on the chemistry of beer

I saw this today. Could be a good opportunity to learn some of the science behind it all. https://janux.ou.edu/landing/course.chem4970.html I am thinking of signing up for it, hopefully it is decent.

    ~100L setup questions

Hey guys, I looking into building ~100L setup with a few mates. We are basically starting a mini brew club with a get together once a month to brew. Anyway, I have no experience with this kind of volume and have a couple of questions. What kind of burner would I need? Would a 4 ring burner...

    Stainless steal fittings Melbourne

Just wondering where people get their stainless steal plumbing fittings from in Melbourne? I know Grain and Grape sell them, I am trying to find somewhere a bit closer and maybe a bit cheaper. I have rung a few plumbing supply stores and have had no luck. RB

    External wort chiller addon

Saw this just before. Could be a nice add on for those that use immersion chillers. http://izbicki.me/blog/the-external-wort-chiller Might be better to run in parallel to the immersion chiller though. Also might be wasting more water. RB

    2.5 decoction wit question

I love my wheat beers and have recently been doing a lot of research into brewing with different types of wheat (malted, raw, flaked and flour etc) and the methods people use. I came across a recipe that has won competitions and some people swear by (tropical flour wit). It uses a 2.5 decoction...

Water down at bottling or keg time?

I was thinking about the possibility of watering down a beer after fermentation. This would be useful in a couple of situations. I have a couple of yeasts that I use on different wheat beers (wyeast 3068 & 3944) and they always have a massive krausen. They can be a pain in the arse in my...

    Partially frozen yeast starter

I made a ~4L yeast starter for my larger that I had planed on making tonight. Last night i chucked in my fermentation fridge to cold crash it. I usually use a temperature controller with the fridge, how ever since I was just cold crashing it, I did not bother. It seems the fridges temp was set...

    Hi everyone

G'day everyone, I am from Melbourne and have been brewing for a bit over a year now. My first beer I did was a kit beer that came with my setup and did not live up to my expectations. After that, I started reading everything I could get my hands on to try to work out how to brew better beer. I...
