8 weeks in the primary - paint thinner smells

I'm in Sydney so it's been pretty cold. No more than 18 degrees with an average of 16 i'd guess. @Prince - is acetobacter a bad thing? A quick read tells me what it but not if it's safe to drink (assuming it tastes Ok)

8 weeks in the primary - paint thinner smells

I got lazy and coupled with detoxing off the booze for a while I've left a Vienna Lager in the primary for 8 weeks. It's actually a Vienna Golden Chili Lager with a whole bunch of chilis (added to boil and after 3 days) plus some carapils speciality grain. Problem is that I have just taken off...

    Hop Hog Extract Recipe

Hey Lochem - as a recent newbie to the scene - this brew isn't tough. It's reasonably straight forward with the boil schedule etc. You'll grow your inventory pretty quick if you buy all the hops in 100g + pellets. Step it through and I'm sure the kind folks on here will be more than happy to...

    Kit And Extract Beer Spreadsheet

I'm new to AHB and after going through this thread and playing with the excel doc I gotta say Ian is the leader of Brew Porn! Well done mate - amazing spreadsheet that just makes me smile whenever I find new features. Well done. Has this been taken to the next level and made into an App? I'd...

    Meat Grinders

The Maxkon has been mentioned a few times but i can't see if anyone has actually bought it and can provide a review? The Tefal seems to be by the best. Might just get that. I'm struggling with spending that sort of cash just to make some sausages every now and again. What else do you use a...

    Learning about partials.

I dont mean to hijack this thread but I think it's on-topic (tell me to bugger off if not). I'm making a partial grain 150 lashes copy. The recipe is: Coopers Pale Ale/OS draught can 1.5kg Tin Wheat Malt 200gm LDM 200gm crystal malt 5g Amarillo 5g Nelson 5g casacde @ 15 mins 5g Amarillo 5g...

    Ruby Ale.

That's just awesome. thanks for posting that recipe. One thing that stands out though is the Colour in SRM. 14 seems way to light. The description of this particular beer as a dark ruby / ruby ale SRM is ~24. (according to TwoBeerDudes here) 14 puts it in the golden / amber ale range...

    Ruby Ale.

I've just finished brewday for a "Hobgoblin" style beer. The recipe I grabbed is trying to mimic a Wychwood (UK) brew called hobgoblin (more info on my blog here) What i'm not clear on is a "Ruby Ale" that the beer claims to be. I would have though simplistically it's due to it's color having...

    US-05 insanely cloudy

Thanks for the advice - i'll keep an eye on it. Would love to cold crash but dont have the space or spare fridge (2 kids kinda chew up my fridge (pun intended)) so might look at the gelatin thing perhaps for another brew that's too cloudy (may as well experience all types yeah). Cheers

    US-05 insanely cloudy

Hi guys - I'm using safale US-05 for the first time with an APA (Coopers extract) and it's insanely cloudy. This is my 5th brew so i'm no expert. It's only day 3 of fermentation so it might drop but thought i'd ask the question - is this normal? I thought US-05 has a high floc (though admittedly...

    375 vs 750

Some great information and links. Thanks for that. So does anyone use 1.25L PET's? From what I read there's no real reason why you wouldn't. That'd work nicely because I work for a softdrink company and end up with a whole stack of those bottles for free!

    375 vs 750

I'm surprised this hasn't been discussed before (I couldn't find it in a search). Are there any benefits between using 375 vs 750ml bottles? Obviously the extra time to clean and bottle twice as much is a pain but what about the actual end product. Do you get a better product in a larger...
