    Oktoberfest

Hi All, The Launceston brew club will be hosting an Oktoberfest celebration on the 11th of October. Thought I'd throw it out there for any other brewers that wanted to attend. Event will be at my place near Lilydale. We'll be have a couple of spit roasts on and will be providing other German...

Nelson Sauvin hops anyone ever used them?

I think 8Wired's Hopwired IPA has a healthy does of NS, amongst other NZ varieties. That's a pretty good drop if you ask me.

    Case swap

I'd be keen. There was talk of this at the brew club as well, perhaps we could combine the two? A lot of people there are members here anyway. Happy to come up to Burnie.

    Carbonating my first keg help

Well yes, the point I was trying to make is you shouldn't (at least I wouldn't) just bung the lid on a keg and put it aside to carbonate another day as the seal won't be airtight and you run the risk of oxidation/infection. You could just add enough CO2 to seal the lid, but I would expect that...

    Carbonating my first keg help

Can you store a corny unpressurised? The lids are pressure sealed and I know mine don't seal properly unless there's some pressure in the keg.

Education time! Tannins - what even are they?

The reason I ask is because the water at our new place is stained with what I'm pretty sure are tannins. Water is slightly brownish and doesn't seem to settle out if you leave to sit. I've brewed a bunch of batches since we moved (all pale beers) but none are ready yet. Haven't noticed anything...

Education time! Tannins - what even are they?

All I know (think I know) is that tannins are an organic compound that make a lot of river water in Tasmania brown. Helpful I know. Speaking of which does anyone know the potential pitfalls of brewing with unfiltered tannin stained water? Hope that's not too off topic TimT.

Continuing Rant Thread - Get it Off Ya Chest here

No it didn't. As jlm said, there were some 4wd tracks closed, but they weren't in world heritage area, possibly not even national parks. Camping is permitted throughout the world heritage area and all national parks.

    More wort than expected...

This is my guess. If you're sure the gravity was measured correctly pre and post cooling, then you must have got extra water in there. 5 litres in an hour is only 1.3 ml per second, not a big leak, though should be noticeable. I've got compression fittings on the end of my chiller and have...

    Cold Vs Hot Water

Just following up, I did try this. Used about 30 litres of hot water to get ~60l (didn't measure) in the HLT from 12C to a bit over 30C. My hot water tank it over 70C. Not as efficient as I was hoping, it got there a lot quicker than the 2400W element would, but don't think it's worth the hassle...

    Cold Vs Hot Water

Won't be very complicated to start with. Put immersion chiller in the HLT, hose from hot tap to IC inlet, hose from IC outlet to an empty fermenter or some such so the water can be re-used. The taps went in the brew room last night so might do a quick test tonight to see if it's viable. Will...

    Cold Vs Hot Water

Was thinking more just to help things along. I reckon it'll go from cold (12C for me at present) to at least 40ish pretty quick. Once the heating rate drops I'll switch it off and let the element do rest. Heating water in an insulated hot water tank has to be far more efficient than a thin steel...

    Cold Vs Hot Water

Been toying with the idea of dual purposing my immersion chiller as an immersion heater. Haven't tried it yet as I haven't had a hot tap near where I brew, this is changing soon though.

    Brew Club Launceston

Only one of the tables left, we were supposed to get more, but someone filched them. We may still get them back but I'm not holding out much hope. I was thinking along the lines of setting up some long feast hall type tables, in and/or outside, except I don't have any but I'll worry about that...

    Brew Club Launceston

Just like to restate my offer to use our place for Oktoberfest. We've just bought an old community run primary school near Lilydale we are converting into a residence, about 25-30 mins from Launceston CBD. Heaps of room inside or out so weather won't be a concern. More than happy for people to...
