Cold crashing for more than two weeks!

Hi guys, Tried searching but couldn’t find anything that answered my specific question. Which is: Anyone ever forgotten about a brew when cold crashing. Sounds silly but I had an emergency come up and went away. Came back and forgot it was sitting there. Now 4 months later its still sitting...

Full extract beer - keg life?

Hi all, Haven't posted in ages cause brewing has gone on the back burner for a while - that leads to my question. I left my keg system sitting for ages with beer in it. I ran out of gas a while back - think I've got a leak in the system. Cause I think I've got a leak I haven't hooked up the...

    Mice in grain

Cheers for the replies. Was expecting a "use the search button" reply but I couldn't find anything. They only chewed the corner of the bag and looks like they've eaten it as it's come out. I poured a bit out the little hole they made and all the grain in the bag seems to be intact. No strange...

    Mice in grain

Hey all, Recently went and brought a bunch of grain so I could have a crack at all grain. Checked my bag of grain this morning and the bloody mice got into it. Went and bought a few fermenter containers from bunnings to store grain in. Just wanted to know if this grain affect my beer or will...

    Draining wort from plate chiller

Bit delayed but how do you push yours through with CO2 mate. I imagine you'd have to have a disconnect hooked up to your chiller? Love to see a photo. Cheers

    Insulating a gas fired vessel

Hi all, Just looking at the various ways that I can insulate a gas fired 70L pot. Done a fair bit of reading and it seems a sleeping bag or something similar seems to be the standard insulation to hold mash temps but looking for other options. Cheers, Newts

    Draining wort from plate chiller

Hey guys, Yesterday I put together an ESB and I think I've got my system sorted now except for this plate chiller. Each brew I am finding that in the lines to and from the plate chiller, and inside the plate chiller after finishing the chilling process I'm losing 1-2 litres of wort that stays...

Using a plate chiller in summer

Nah, no bore here. No source of cool water at a. I'll just have to make my own cool water.

Making your own hydrometer sample jars?

Yeah, I did just buy another hydrometer and didn't realise it didn't come with a sample jar. Have 4 hydrometers and a refractometer so def don't need any more measuring devices. I prefer the hydrometer over refrac personally hence why I wanted a new container. Guess I should just order one with...

fermenting steps using fridge (& yeast) in hot weather.

Yeah, I'm with Yob on this one. I went down the road of an STC1000 because of all the talk about how cheap they are etc. In the end I decided I didn't want to wire it as I'm not an electrician. Ended up costing me around $80 for the STC. Then decided you can get a Keg King one for $70 and you...

Making your own hydrometer sample jars?

Hey all, Anyone done this before? I put my plastic one in a hot sink and it melted away. No one sells them locally and I know they wouldn't be hard to make. Won't put a hydrometer in my brew - wouldn't risk an infection. Just fishing for ideas. Cheers, Newts

Using a plate chiller in summer

Thanks Malty, that's what I wanted to know. So there is an increased risk of infection and that's why people don't do it. Yeah, well I'll have to look at my setup and see what's going to work. The problem is you don't really know how it works until you do it. I like the idea of recircing with...

Using a plate chiller in summer

Yeah, I am running it in the opposite direction to the wort. Seems the tap water is just too hot. I'll have to have a think about it but I do like the look of Maltyhops setup - basically recirc the wort till it's at the minimum temp the plate chiller will give, then run cold water through for...

Using a plate chiller in summer

Thanks for the responses guys, exactly what I wanted to know. Looks like the key is to recirc the wort which is a problem with my current setup. I'll have to sort something out. When you say a pond pump NewtownClown are they like the pumps you use in a water feature that you pick up from...

Using a plate chiller in summer

Hey all, I've been brewing for a while now and have recently moved to full volume boils doing extract. I'm working with a 70L pot now and I'm finding chilling the wort to pitching temp is hard in this weather. In the past I was brewing in a 17L pot so I'd just cool it in an ice bath in the sink...

    Keg King Elements

Hmmm, i posted last time and thought cause there's so many posts on this subject mine would just disappear, but it hasn't moved far. On that, I took it back in for a trade - no problem with the vendor but I got the new one and it's exactly the same. Boiled once and it has the same rusting...

    Water causing stainless steel rust?

Hey guys, haven't been on in a while. Thought I'd have a look on here before I put on a brew today. I wasn't going to post any pics as the vendor was very good to us - full replacement when I visit next and can use this pot in the interim. But for peoples piece of mind here are some pics...

    Safale yeast sachets waterproof/resistant?

Hey guys, Just wanted to know if anyone knows if the sachets that safale yeasts come in have a level of resistance to water. It's time to pitch and I've just gone to my fridge to find the sachets are all slightly damp from being in the fridge - don't have a choice but to pitch as the worts...

    Quality pots? Keg king?

Following my other thread are there a number of known quality stainless pot brands/suppliers that brewers use and swear by? What do people have to say about the Keg King ones? That's my only local supplier and I doubt they're stocked here anyway. Cheers Newts
