Next Step For An Extract Newbie?

Big +1 on that, the ability to see on the graph exactly what tweaks to the amount of grain, DME, LME, adjuncts & hops will do to your beer is invaluable. In your case if you're doing partial boils, use the spreadsheet with the Hop Concentration Factor (HCF) turned on, put in the volume of your...

    Brewnight Fail

Ripping story mate, well told. Curious though, why transfer from pot to FV via siphon? Why not just pour it in? Isn't it good to splash it around to get plenty of oxygen in there during the transfer? I assume you were trying to leave the break behind...but you went to a lot of trouble doing...

    Small Batch Cider: Fermentation Advice

I just used a white wine yeast recommended by Costante Imports. Interesting mine is so much lower in a much shorter time, what juice did you use? Also, what are you using as a 15l fermenter? I'm keeping an eye out for something that size, preferably still with a tap for bottling directly from...

    Small Batch Cider: Fermentation Advice

My first attempt at a cider has been fermenting (in a brewfridge set to 20 degrees) for 9 days now. It started at 1044, and is down to pretty much spot on 1000. It's nothing but 7 litres of apple juice from the local safeway....any thoughts as to how long it might take to be finished? I think...

    Whats In The Glass (commercial)

+1 to that, bloody ripping drop. And their Dark Ale is bloody good too. They'd wanna be at $68 a case. Such a shame local craft brews are so damned exxy. I stopped drinking 3 Ravens a while ago due to the price, despite them being 5 minutes up the road.

    2nd Brew

Nah no way is it getting down to 1005 with Brew Enhancer 2 in there, iirc that's 1kg of dry malt, dextrose and maltodextrin. The kit s/sheet suggests a 23 litre brew with your ingredients should finish about 1011. So you should right for bottling by Sunday.

    Hops

I did a big order recently from Discount Home Brew Warehouse and included a couple of their grain/hop bags in that order. I grabbed a 2nd FV setup, couple of cans of LME, cracked grain and hops, bottling tree, bottle rinser, stericlean etc and the whole lot was only $15 delivery. If you do a...

    2nd Brew

+1 on the airlock comment, my 3rd brew, the Irish Red Ale from Coopers website did not emit one single bloop through my airlock in the 10 days it was in the fermenter. It was my first time fermenting in this particular FV, it's exactly the same FV as my original one but the airlock is made of a...

    Rapid Head Loss

For what it's worth (and some on this forum think very little, although it could be like IT geeks hating Microsoft), I wrote to Coopers about this in regards to their TC Wheat product. I asked how long it could be kept in a cupboard at 'room temp' before transferring to the fridge. Here's...

    Rapid Head Loss

Drool, I like your thinking, i'm a huge fan of wheat beers myself, so will also continue to experiment with the style. So many WLP yeasts to work through! Both of my wheat kits have only been fermented in the primary (both took around 6 days to reach FG, I left them another 2 days then...

    Rapid Head Loss

I just put a bottle of my 2nd wheat beer in the fridge this arvo, the one with the wb-06 yeast. It's only been in the bottle 9 days, but just now poured a terrific head which it maintained through the entire 500ml. Spectacular beer considering it's a kit.

Carbonation Drops - Yay Or Nay?

Give this a burl mate: http://webspace.webring.com/people/ms/sirl...Calculator.html I did it recently when using carb drops for priming my bottles, but I had some 500ml ones so used the above to measure some dextrose in there rather than trying to cut the drops up. If you set the desired...

    Rapid Head Loss

Shite sorry, my bad, for some reason my brain didn't process the fact you'd used LME, not DME. My first TC Wheat is also 'spritzy', I put it down to using carb drops in 330ml bottles....now i just pour it aggressively directly into a glass not tipped to the side to release some of the gas, it...

    Kit And Extract Beer Spreadsheet

Interesting, thanks again. You'd reckon the free online edition would be the one with the most current info given how easy it would be to update. The photos in it do make it look pretty ancient though. Actually I just checked the site again, and your point is very valid, look at this...

    Rapid Head Loss

If I recall mate the TC Wheat can says to brew it with 500gm of DME, and 300gm of dextrose. How much DME did you use? How does the beer taste, is it carbonated enough? My K&K with TC Wheat and 1kg of dextrose doesn't have much head a little while after the pour, but it's only been in the...

    Kit And Extract Beer Spreadsheet

Cheers for that, it's a little misleading because JP's How to Brew talks about hot break and ensuring you leave it behind in the pot in Chapter 7-2 of Section 1, which is Brewing with Malt Extract, hence why I was expecting to see it when I try my extract brew.
