    Rehydrating.....hurrah

not meaning to stir up past debates, just pleased at results in switching my method of pitching yeast

    Rehydrating.....hurrah

Well.....after a long time, I finally started rehydrating my yeast, rather than just pitching. Hesitant, mainly due to laziness. Hey, it's a long brew day after all, and after several pints, it always seemed too much of a chore I'm now a convert. My yeast kicks off so much quicker! The...

    Pumps and flow rate

The ball valve is fully open and tubing fitted to a 3/8" barb I have two pumps and both are sitting ~1mtr below my HLT/MT/BK vessels. Both pumps have identical lengths ~1 mtr tubing on inlet and outlet of pumps. All tubing that I am currently using has an inner diameter of 0.315" Some...

    Pumps and flow rate

I'm working with roughly a metre of tubing to the pump and the same to the receiving vessel. Surely, this can't be restricting flow rate? If I were to connect intake of pump directly to the water out vessel, and a little bit more for receiving, then I would get the max flow rate? Edit: It...

    Pumps and flow rate

If someone can elaborate for me here, I'd be extremely grateful I bought a couple of the magnetic pumps from KK (~$65 ea), which also seem popular at other HB suppliers, and the flow rate has me confused. Apparently, these should pump ~19-20L/min, however, I just performed a wet run on my set...

    Silver

@wide eyed That is interesting as, apart from these last holidays, I've not bought commercial beer in over 2 years unless I can avoid it. I do wonder about the difference in taste, from the bottle/keg, to the glass or whatever it may be (in my case a silver cup) Regan

    Silver

Said cup has not been stamped, other than the makers mark This cup has come from Egypt, from a family member whom was posted there in the 1980's, and I have no reason to doubt what is said about the cup other than that it is a cup made from silver. Perhaps you're right, though. The little...

    Silver

So, I got myself a silver cup given to me for Chrissy. I doubt it is pure silver, but more than likely sterling silver or something I tell you what, it sure tastes different drinking out of this rather than glass. Doing a side by side, it somehow changes the feel/body of the beer. I'm on...

    Grey scum

well, I pushed ahead with the brew regardless. I'm fairly new to crushing my own grain, so that this could happen because of too much flour took me by surprise. initially, I thought it was the ss scrubbies I had put under my false bottom to aid in filtering whilst sparging (not that there was...

    Grey scum

Scooped out with sieve This is after multiple scoops. First scoop looked 10x worse Edit: other photos I took are too large to attach

    Grey scum

Probably finer than usual, yeah. Honestly though, it looks like something you'd fish out of your washing machine filter

    Grey scum

Noticed this moldy grey looking stuff on top of grain bed after draining the mash tun. Thought it strange but grew more concerned when transferred to BK and saw lots of it shortly before boil What the hell is this? I've never had this happen before. Do I tip or continue?

    Hydrometer & FG

Unless I'm missing something here, if there was enough head space in the sample jar then this shouldn't be an issue?

Would be sealed with glad wrap, along the same lines as the carboy

    Hydrometer & FG

Sorry, I should also clarify that I sanitise every time I take a sample. My concerns were more about possible airborn wild yeast getting into my beer whilst sampling, even though this is fairly low risk (paranoia)
