I'm back (back in the New York groove)

Ok so I'm not anywhere near the big apple (apologies to Ace Frehley), but I'm am brewing again for the first time in a bit over 5 years! I pulled out the old system and have it a good scrub last weekend, then did a simple pale ale, more to test the seals etc than anything else (basically...

Wine kits - worth a go?

I've been toying with the idea of making some wine at home, without getting into the arguments about how cheap wine is these days and whether or not it's worth the time to do it yourself, has anyone tried making wine from a kit? I'm talking about kits like the ones they sell at Brewcraft...

    Breaking in a new rig

Hanging out in the new factory with Micah at Core Brewing Concepts, giving his new rig is first run through. So much shiny stuff... The maiden voyage is a trip to flavour town with a double IPA, 5- of hops every 3 minutes for the first 20 minutes, then 10g every 3 minutes for the remaining 40...

Free 375ml green bottles in Hampton Park

I have a steady supply of green 375ml twist top bottles (cascade light) from a friend of the family, and have a large surplus at the moment (about 20 cartons). The bottles are unwashed and have the labels on them, and they come in the normal Cascade Light cartons. They are easy to clean, a...

Mashing - Water or Grain in first?

Was watching a couple of clips on youtube over the weekend, quite a few of them (all american) showed the brewers filling thier mash tuns with water and then adding the grain to the water. I've always done it the other way around, assuming this will bring the temperature of the mash down to...

Bags of "Beer Mix" from the "Beer Machine" - is there

I have just been given 5 bags of "The Beer Mix" (usually used in "The Beer Machine") by someone who had a go with the beer machine and thought it sucked balls so bad they threw the whole thing in the bin. He passed the bags on to me because he thought a real brewer* might be able to do...

    Brewing low alcohol beers

I was watching a recent video episode of Basic Brewing () where James had put together a couple of very light beers (less than 2% abv) using Rye and Wheat, his reasoning being the rye adds a lot of mouthfeel so the brews would not taste too watery. I figured it would be nice to have some light...

    Pilsner - Question about racking

Hi All, Having recently got off my ever expanding backside and set up a temp controlled fridge I felt it was time to do a pilsner. I've pretty much followed Boston's recipe and I'm comfortable with most of the steps, however I was wondering about racking to secondary. When I brew an ale I...

Homebrew Gear on the 3D Printer?

The guys in the lab at my office have managed to convince the bosses that they need a 3D printer which may be available for use by smooth talkers bearing coffee. This raises the question, what nifty homebrew gear should I print out?

My efficiency sucks, can you help?

Hi All, I’m having a somewhat frustrating time with my efficiency and I’m wondering if anyone can give me some pointers. When I started brewing AG on my system I was hitting around 72%, I’ve done 20 brews now and for the last 5 or 6 brews my efficiency has plummeted to an...

Hi All, I'm heading up to Gouburn NSW this week / weekend for work and was wondering if anyone could reccomend an establishment were a bloke can find a decent beer (preferably coupled with decent grub but clearly the beer is the most important factor). I see they have a brewery which I'll be...

Very Small Batch fermenters - PET, Glass, what can I use?

Hi All, I want to get my hands on some cheap (preferably free via the magic of recycling) 2L to 5L vessels for very small batch brewing. The idea being I can experiment by adding different hops / adjuncts etc to the same 20L batch of beer split across 5 or so fermenters to see the difference...

Help needed - leaky crown seals

I've noticed that my last few brews have lacked a bit of fizz, something I had attributed to the fact that I am cold crashing before bottling now (I had guessed less yeast in suspension = slower carbonation times) and assumed the fizz would pick up over the next few weeks, but I handed out a few...

    Inspire me

I want to brew something this weekend but don't want to brew the same old pale ale style of beer that I always seem to end up brewing so I need some inspiration, what am I going to brew this weekend? Needs to be an Ale as temp control is non existent, and nothing too crazy, I'm not interested...

Belgian Saison - should I cold crash?

Sorry if this has been asked and answered before, I did search but couldnt find anything. I'm brewing my first Saison with the Wyeast Belgian strain of yeast, gravity is sitting on 1.008 after 6 weeks in the fermenter. Should I cold crash before bottling or will that detract from the yeasty taste?

Advice Needed - What Can I Do With This?

I was given this by a work mate the other day, his dad used it to make wine. I've got a couple of fermenters at home and have been brewing beer (from kits mainly) for a couple of years now, just not sure what to do with this. All the welds, joins and seals are top quality. Any suggestions...
