    steamrail

Had a $50 Coles giftcard. Committed to a slab. Figured it would be a Coles job pretty quickly upon looking at it. Still, $15 cheaper than JS. Currently drinking the amber ale and, well, it's not horrible, but it is thin and watery. Should be $11 a six pack and have a marketing tag line: Slightly...

    Gage Roads Pumpkin Ale

With this at $4 a (mini-)long neck and Saramac pumpkin ale at $14 a six pack at BWS I tried both. At that price, they're both pretty good but I'd go with Saramac been the better tasting, more malty of the two.

    The Order Of Adding Extras

I'm planning on adding some crystal malt, hop pellets and DME (and maybe some dex) to a Coopers pre-hopped goo tin. I'm assuming I don't need extra bittering so I'm just after flavour from the hops. I can't boil the the crystal malt because of unpleasant tannins. My questions would be: Do hops...

    'battle Of The Toucans'

For Xmas I got a can of Brigalow Munich Lager, read a bit that said they aren't great, so I figured I'd go crazy and use it with a can of Homebrand draught, both kit yeast and a bit of dex. Temperature started out at 18 but got up around 24 in my absence. After 2.5 weeks in the bottle, it isn't...

Ok. I'm still learning. I've found this works rather well. What would you alter?

    Coopers Kit

It's cheap and everything is at Safeway :D Handy when you're stranded in BF Idaho.

    Coopers Kit

Depends on your reasons for wanting to start your adventure into the world of home brewing. You can make a basic beer that is similar to Carlton draught while saving 90% of what would be your slab money. Simply use 2 cans of goo, both yeast packets, 2 cups of sugar, around 26 litres of water...

    Keeping The Wife Happy.

Ha ha! I knew the shoes would be mentioned soon enough. Whenever I've heard the cry "I need new shoes" I'd fire back "What's wrong with the collection you've got?" And whenever you look in wardrobe and see those shoes that have been worn once and cost over $100, you've gotta hold back from...

    What are you listening to

The 4th Annual TISM Fan BBQ should be on December 3rd down at the Duncan MacKinnon Reserve. All the cool people will be there. Details on Farcebook. Just listened to the new Tom Waits album. It's very musical and awesome.

How Did Your First Brew Taste?

If you used the kit yeast, expect a sour apple twang taste. If you're a student/unemployed it is still drinkable. My first one being the lager that came with the kit tasted like equal parts apple juice, Tooheys New and camel piss. This was due to the temp being around 26.

    Bottling Beer

I reckon when ya starting out, you should try a bottled brew every 7, 10, 14, 21 and so forth days with you basic K&Ks just so you can truly appreciate the effect maturing has on the flavour, and get a first-hand taste of what we mean by green flavour.

    Submerging Fermenter Tap In Water?

Need a tub to fill will with water and frozen bottles very soon as the heat is on this weekend. I've got the basic Coopers DIY kit which is just plastic and rubber, nothing to rust. Thinking that finding a tub approx 6cm high so the tap hangs over the lip of the tub would be very tricky. So, I'm...

    Bottling Beer

Bursting would be relative to how long it took your brew to ferment. And that would be relative to original gravity, temperature and type of yeast. Example: I bottled a brew recently after 7 days because it fermented out to about 1000 grav at 24 degrees. In winter using a lager yeast (kit yeasts...

    Kit & Kilo Ginger Beer

Just put mine down a few moments ago, twas: tin of Coopers GB 200g of fresh ginger (grated) 1.6kg-ish of raw sugar 750ml Bunderim Ginger Refresher 10 cloves (whole) 3 cinnamon stick (whole) 2 big chillies, 4 baby chillies rind and juice of 1 lemon. 1.5 packets of Coopers yeast. Method: The...

    Kit & Kilo Ginger Beer

I'm thinking of doing something similar to Hotchilli's recipe (but with half the chilli). I'm thinking of not straining it so some ginger pulp ends up in the bottle. People love that! But what of the chilli pulp in the bottle? Would it be inoffensive after being soak for weeks?

Crushed Crystal Malt - What Do?

Not adding extra hops unless I manage to scab 100g or so off a mate. Would a meat spike thermometer work well enough in liquid to gage the temperature?

Crushed Crystal Malt - What Do?

Correct! Looking at balancing the double hop effect of a toucan while making a better tastings beer with minimal cost and effort.

Crushed Crystal Malt - What Do?

Greetings! I have bought some crushed crystal malt for the first time. There's plenty advise on steeping and what have you. I was just wondering how long will it last in a sealed bag and where is the best place to store it? Also, wondering about it's fermentation ratio, ie: what percent of...
