I'm in the same boat as you OP. Never have had a kit beer that hasn't tasted like ass. All grain fine, kit beer bad. I think its just the kit beer. Some people just have different palates.

Drank the Coopers Brew A IPA. 6%, 60IBU. The beer was marketed as a cloudy ale... and boy was that an understatement. It was a slurry. A soup. I spoke to the bar manager about it, they pour only Coopers so they know how to handle the kegs. Stored upside down before tapping, keg rolled before...

Yep that's why. Not under pressure, the fermenters had blow off hoses going into big white buckets. The activity in the buckets... was going BANANAS.

Pirate Life use US05 for their yeast. The brewer told me when I was at the brewery. They also ferment at 21 degrees.

I'd go a fresh wort kit. Easy as piss and gets you back into the swing of things. And the fresh wort kits are a proper AG kit so the beer is gunna be good, much better than a kit and kilo.

It annoys me that Coopers say beer will be ready in two weeks, for me this has never been the case. More like 4 weeks.

What an awesome gift!!! I'm so sorry about to hear about your mum. I lost my mother in April this year, she went from being perfectly seemingly healthy last Christmas to being diagnosed with cancer in Jan and she died in April, 13 weeks later. No two ways about it - losing your mother is tough...

I've noticed the same thing using wheat. My beers normally taste ready and good at 4 weeks, but whenever I've used a sizeable amount of wheat, it's more like 2 or 2 and a half weeks and they're ready to go.

In my opinion Vintage hits its peak around 18 months. See if you can hang on to it for at least a year. I've got 3 years worth stored in my cellar - the 2011, (5 bottles left) 2012 (half a carton) and 2013 (3 quarters of a carton). The 2011 was amazing, the 2012 so-so, too early to tell how well...

Yep I actually had a can of Southwark Bitter the other night when I visited a friend. And Southwark Old Stout is excellent - last year the brewery even kegged it for the first time in years, the Wheaty here in Adelaide got a keg and ran it through their glasshopper filled with Luwak coffee...
