    Chiller Convection

This is the key. Removing the boundary layer of cooled wort to maximize efficiency. If you want rapid chilling this part if vital. This is why I have chosen a counter-flow chiller but a whirlpool immersion chiller will help improve things alot. Ive seen a static immersion chiller take 100mins...

    Chiller Convection

I assume your talking about immersion chillers Paxxy? The reason for the larger size is to increase the surface area which greatly improves the efficiency of the chiller. In regards to your suggestion, I cant be sure, Ive never tested it. Its an interesting thought but I would guess that the...

    Sodium Metasilicate

Hey mate, MHB and phonos are correct. It quite often goes under the name 'Brewers Detergent'. Its used in other cleaning applications too and even in gardening so you could try your local CRT but home brew shops do stock it. another link: http://www.absolutehomebrew.com.au/?page_id=14

    Iodophor Contact Time?

Hey Mate, Most of the documentation I read mentions a contact time of 1 minute to be effective so sounds like your fine. I usually try for about 5 minutes or so if im not in a rush just to be super safe. Ive im spray it on something I usually give it two coats of spray if I can.

    Need Help

It really varies on alot of things and fairly irrelevant, can be both but usually no foam. If the beer tastes good then it is good. I cant stress enough to get into the habit of smelling and tasting your hydrometer readings. I take a reading every 2 days for every beer I make and I smell and...

    10% Anyone?

As indicated it gets a little fiddly when you aim for high % beers. Fermentation can stall and you can get really overpowering flavors unless you use the right procedure or yeast. Unless you have quite a bit of brewing experience or are keen on a challenge I would sudgest doing a double can of...

    Need Help

Gday Jezza, A little concerned for you but might not be all lost. The yeast wont be in pellet form, they are dried when you put them in and come to life when you pitch them and should look anywhere from a creamy to dark brown slush depending on the beer. I wouldnt get into the habbit...

    Racking For Clear Beer

Hey guys, Disclamer: I'm not trying to start a racking debate. :icon_cheers: I was thinking but couldn't find and answer. I usually always just do a primary fermentation. I was doing some reading and alot of people kept mentioning that one of the reasons they racked their beer into secondary...

What Has Been Your Longest Run Of Afd's

Not counting the odd binge every month or so. Usually I have an alcohol free day at least once or twice a week. I almost never drink sunday then the other is just a night mid week. I hardly ever have more than 2 beers in a session also. After a hard week a friday might call for 3 or 4 but I'm...

I Messed Up... Tell Me How Bad.

Definitely isn't ruined. When the gravity reading is the same for about 3 or so days you can be sure that its done. Has it been in the secondary for 5 days at 15 C? I assume your using the coopers ale yeast? Those temps will slow them down a bit so make sure its stable over about 4 days.

How Old Is Your Oldest Beer?

I have 2 bottles left of my Imperial Indian Pale ale 9.5% :-( I might have them with my mate tonight at new years. They are about 1 year old. I have about 12 PET bottles of Chocolate porter which are about 18 months old. Delish! Actually come to think of it. All my beer is almost a year old...
