    Oak Options for Doppelbock

I'm fermenting a Doppelbock right now and I'm planning to add oak to the fermenter while it's lagering. Any recommendations on which oak and toast level? It's light brown colour with a heap of Munich malt as base (and some supporting Pilsner and Caramunich malt) with a medium level of hopping...

    Australian Amateur Brewing Championship

Yup I came up with a donut. Very happy though to have placed well at Vicbrew. Obviously a beer needs to be good to win (or at least can't be bad) but at AABC there are undoubtedly many good beers. Would've loved to win but clearly other ones were judged to be better. Well done to your...

    VICBREW 2013

Thanks for the kind words guys. Very well done event. I found the quality of the beers were considerably better than last year which is a good sign for homebrew! Thanks to the Martin, Mark, Andy, Michael and all the Vicbrew committee. You guys as usual did an awesome job. Congrats to...

    VICBREW 2013

Mate I judged that beer and it was very well brewed. Well done!

    Biab; Consecutive Batches?

I follow a similar process. No chill with a separate pot to get hot water to hit strike temp quickly for a second batch. These two things get me through 2 brews in approx 10hrs so if you're keen on doing two brews without a whole new system, all you need is a 12L-15L pot and no chill cubes...

    Vicbrew 2012

Great weekend all. Thanks for an awesome job organising a very successful event Mark, Andy, Michael, Martin and everyone else that put so much effort in. Great job Manticle as well - only brewer with 2 golds! Would've loved to try the Biere de Garde. Jealous of those judges. Let's hope...

    Vicbrew 2012

I deserve that. Been brewing far too much and clearly have a lot of brews kicking around. Having moved in with my better half might distract me a bit. ;) Looking forward to judging the Pils tomorrow! Good luck judging folks!

    Vicbrew 2012

Ha ha! That would mean the crazy amount of brewing I've been doing would all be excluded from Vicbrew. 15 full kegs these days.... need to send at least a few somewhere! Jokes aside thanks for the complement. I've been fortunate enough to have a string of luck. Cheers! Oh and good luck...

Worthogs - Pale Ale Mania 2012?

Looking at my latest Belgian Triple stuck ferment I'm inclined to agree. I know - off topic... but I'm Frustrated!

Worthogs - Pale Ale Mania 2012?

Thanks for that mate. Yeah MB dinner killed the tri-centennial and I hadn't taken a single bottle before hand for myself. The AIPA and APA were bottled from a follow up batch with same recipe but a switch to a mix of Cascade and Calypso hops instead. Have to say the Tri Centennial worked much...

Worthogs - Pale Ale Mania 2012?

Thanks Manticle. I've always been a huge fan of your English Pale Ale. Good score and good showing. Had a 5th place with an AIPA. Same beer scored worst at 14.5 in APA. I bottled them both the night before. Not sure if that's fast enough for a contamination to work through but who knows...

Oxygen Regulator Won't Fit Bernzomatic O2 Cylinger

Thanks mate. I'll reach out to More Beer and see if I can understand what the deal is. Appreciate the offer to compare - I'll give that a go as a next step if I need to. Cheers!

Oxygen Regulator Won't Fit Bernzomatic O2 Cylinger

So I bought the More Beer Oxygen regulator and a disposable oxygen bottle. I was excited to use it tonight only to discover that the regulator doesn't seem to fit my Bernzomatic disposable bottle. I know it's left hand thread so that's not the issue. In my frustration I've really tried to...

Melbourne Brewers British Ales Competition (vic)

Congratulations Geoff - looks like you brewed up a very well presented Scottish 80. Would've loved to try it. Congrats to Kellee too - great novice showing!! Unfortunately my valve flipped on my counter pressure filler on me post filling the ESB bottle so the rest of the beer ended out in my...

    Anyone Been To Canada Latey?

Hey Cats, Just got back from Canada this week and had a blast drinking a few great Ontario craft beers. The quality has massively improved in the past 12-18mths. The Retail side is still terrible but it's a bit better. Go to the LCBO, not the Beer Store. They're the only two options to buy...

    Wyeast Smack Pack Burst Open

Ok so I just smacked my Wyeast pack and it burst. I probably smacked it too hard (stupid I know). There was a very small leak out the bottom so I tipped it upside down, dropped it into a sanitised ziploc bag and am letting it sit to increase in temp to room temp before pitching. Anyone think...

    Biab - Bag Worn Out

Thanks mate. I do use Irish Moss in boil at 10mins. I use a no chill technique but have only noticed the cloudiness come out in my last 2 brews (I've done 25+ BIAB). My latest one this weekend came out clear again so now I'm looking at process. Both brews that were cloudy had a mashout temp...

    Biab - Bag Worn Out

Hmmmm.... maybe that's not causing my cloudy wort / bits in boil issue. It's got a few small holes so I think I'll make a new one anyway and then hope it gets better. Doesn't hurt to keep it fresh!

    Biab - Bag Worn Out

So BIAB users, How long does your bag last? I use a Swiss Voile polyester curtain material bag that my gf stitched herself. It's been quite sturdy and reliable but the last 3 brews have had a fair amount of small grain bits in the boil. Looking at the bag there are a few small tears at the...
