    Starting Old Yeast

Haven't had a lot of joy with the wYeast Kolsch strain and no-one over here carries White Labs, so thought I'd give a ProCulture sample a go. Unfortunately the HB store I chose only had really old stock of the strain I wanted (PRO-107). Not sure whether it was a Born on Date or Use Before date...

Bought a bottle from the IBS a couple of weeks back, only just got round to trying it the other night... OMFG ! Awesome ! So given the limited availability and not so limited price, I want to brew a clone. Which I've never really done before. Did some google searching and came up with; From...

    Mika In Victoria

Not exactly off topic, beer will be involved, but thought it was the best place. Landing in Melbourne probably on a Sunday arvo. Idea is to spend a day in Melbourne seeing the sights, I've never been a tram, then head out to Healesville, hoping the White Rabbit will be open by then, and then via...

    The Science Behind Step Mashing

Ok, so this is related to the article 'The science of step mashing' in the Jan-Feb 08 version of BYO Magazine. I'll paraphrase the following a little (or maybe a lot); Now that I've typed it out, it's starting to make a bit more sense. Still... I was under the impression that an acid rest was...

    Witchcraft And Superstitions

Alright, so here's the go, this should bring out all the alternative lifestylers. My Dad is more of a devotee than I am as it generally applies to bio-dynamic gardening more than brewing beer, though the story has it that these "nodes" influence the creation of all things when they are in force...

Fermenting Fridge Mould - How To Prevent

Alright, I've seen mention of it, but that's about it. Cleaned my fermenting fridge when I first got it, ran fine for a couple of months and then the mold started appearing, then in the move I had to shut the fridge off and have only just got back to cleaning it up..YUK ! It's gone nuts in...

    Wheat Beer + Wheat Malt

Hi all, I've got a wheat beer kit and some dried wheat malt extract and some wheat malt and some LME and some US-56 (not changing that) and some Saaz and Hallertau hops. Basically a bunch of stuff. I want to make a nice wheat beer (my fav) and I'm wanting to use the wheat malt (500g) but...

    Jandakot Liquor Store

I have never been to the International beer store, but I'm told it's a wonderful thing. And if they have as many (or more) International beers as Jandakot Liquor I have got to get there ! I spotted an ad in the West Australian (Local News Paper) advertisig their Oktoberfest specials so visited...

    Js Golden Ale

I was thinking about trying to replicate the style, though not strictly the flavour. By that I was thinking cold conditioning to lighten it up (from the label)...debate away. I searched the forum but found AG recipes and no K&K. I'd like to be doing the AG, but problem with the pots....but...

    Cheap Esky

Was just at Bunnings buying some more beer bits. Noticed they had a 44Litre rectangular esky for $25. Hasn't got a clamp for the lid, it just sits on and there's no drain bung, so you'd have to drill your ow hole thru the side of the esky. But thought I'd mention it.

    Muntons Gold

Alright, another question for the board. While I was at the brew shop picking up the ingredients for the latest brew, noticed the Muntons Gold kits in a little box. Looks to consist of two smallish cans (though apparently still produes 23L) in a little cardboard box with a handle. Had a quick...

    K&k Pilsner

The Keg is empty...long live the Keg :beerbang: But need to fill it up, and thinking a Pilsner or Pilsener (as defined in the BJCP guidleines) would be a good thing (the missus is a fan ;) ) I've previously tried the Coopers Brewmaster Pilsner with Saaz hops (teabag style) before and didn't...

    A Priest Doesn't Lie

I dunno, I think it's OK, but if it flies too close to the wind, please delete A distinguished young woman on a flight from Switzerland asked the priest beside her, "Father, may I ask a favor?" "Of course. What may I do for you?" "Well, I bought an expensive electronic hair dryer that is...

    Kegs

Was wondering the net and found this... The new plastic keg. Interesting that they claim the existing kegs are only $120-130 worth. Don't see how that can be right. Hell... if they were that cheap I'd go and buy a new one right now :D

What Hops/grains To Use And When ?

I'll probably get myself into all sorts of trouble with this thread as it's fairly broad (and probably covered before). 1./ My LHBS has a little chart that basically says, If you're brewing this kind of beer, you need this kinda Hop. The list is reasonably comprehensive but of course is to be...

    Malt Extract Expiry Date

I'm sure I've seen a thread for this somewhere else in this forum, but can't seem to find it. Found lots of other really interesting stuff, but that's another story... Was at the LHBS and they had the Coopers Liquid Wheat Malt Extract in the bargain bin, as it was out of code. At $5 for 1.5kgs...
