    What Is An IPA Beer?

Thanks for that condescension. Charming to have this interaction with you. We are lucky though to have someone as knowledgeable as Mark on the forum and like a lot of us, I value his willingness to share.

    What Is An IPA Beer?

In the ordinary course, from the brewery to the pub in bloody cold old Blighty, what you describe is no doubt true. Pretty sure that when you put beer on a long voyage you had to maintain it along the way. But I am not a hundred percent on this point so you may be correct. In my mind, a cask...

    Stupid thread but I'm new

Mate, if I could have my time over and I was just starting to brew, I'd teach myself this truth: If you do not have patience, brewing beer will teach you its necessity. Be calm, brother, and expect that you will have some successes and some failures. You will learn more from the failures. We...

Good on you mate. Take heaps of pride. Glad you are in the community. Hell, you may even grow a beard one day. 75% efficiency is okay. But efficiency is for cost accountants, not brewers . I don't GAF if I spend an extra five bucks on making a special beer. Even if its only special to me...

    What Is An IPA Beer?

That's what they had. Brewers pitch is a neutral, inert material that effectively turns a wooden cask into a beer impervious, oxygen impervious container. Remember the beer was live - still fermenting - outgassing via wooden spiles inserted into the bung-hole, maintaining a positive internal...

    Stupid thread but I'm new

More chance if you take the lid off all the time, breathe on the wort, scratch you beard over it, generally f@ck around with it exposed. Look, once you get used to it you won't even measure it at all. You will know when it is ready via experience. Here's some really good advice: Make your...

    What Is An IPA Beer?

Didn't I say debate would follow.? Love it! I do not agree, SE. No such thing as stainless steel in the late 18th/early 19th century. Beer went off very quickly in an unlined wooden cask, in a hot ship hold, on the way to India for several months. Oaky bullshit is a modern conceit.

Also meant to say if you are worried about a cup of beer you are making too small a batch 🤔.

    Stupid thread but I'm new

Nope. A hydrometer is accurate if you degass (twirl it!) and sight it correctly at fermentation temps. Complex equations are no substitute for practical and pragmatic measurement. For hundreds of years, every excise agency everywhere in the world has used hydrometers to measure alcohol...

    What Is An IPA Beer?

Love the article and Mark's response. He's dead right about casks and beer. The wood never, ever came into contact with the beer. A layer of "brewers pitch" (a kind of tarry semi-solid) lined the inside of the wooden barrels and formed a neutral intermediary barrier. My understanding of British...

Buy a hydrometer. Take a sample. Stop trying to overcomplicate something very simple.

How To Clean Your Grain Mill

I have exactly the same mill. Bought it in 1998 at AHB in Heidelberg Vic. If you wanted a mill, that's what there was. Around that time, that home-brew shop used an old supermarket coffee bean grinder (Remember that? Grinding up your own bag of coffee at Coles? ) to mill grains for all the...

    Cleaning a keg

You can speed up your cleaning, minimize your effort and chemical use, and probably get a cleaner keg by using one of these: https://www.kegland.com.au/bucket-blaster-keg-and-fermenter-washer-kit.html or https://www.keg-king.com.au/corny-cleaner-keg-and-fermenter-cleaning-kit.html Or build...

Bottle filling with Carbonation Caps - whats your "best practice"

Best practice is don't do it, I reckon. Use a proper CP filler. Posted something over here on that topic

Hello from US - and partial carbonation drops to offset CO2 loss when bottling under pressure?

Howdy there partner. I do a lot of counter pressure bottling at times. The attached article has some good info. My take on your idea is that you risk an uncontrolled secondary fermentation in the bottle by adding more fermentables. Plus it adds time to get the beer back in drinking...

Thanks for the viewing suggestion. Will take a look. I went looking for a drink in Mongolia once - not that far away. This is what I found.

    Suggestion/Idea: 50L SS insulated pot $120 delivered

Seller just advised it’s foam insulated. So, any takers? Curious to know how you go if so.

    Suggestion/Idea: 50L SS insulated pot $120 delivered

Not sure about that Mark - only says its insulated. For a hundred bucks, I reckon its just a layer of foam between thin SS walls. The stickers on the image seem to suggest this, but hey, I don't read Chinese. Still, you may be right. I should probably ask the seller.
