Downsizing - brewing books, beer paddles and bottles

Bit of a cleanout when the shed is overdue and you can't figure out how you ever fit so much stuff in there in the first place. Junk spreads to space available. I'm based in Frankston for pickup - yeah, free. I might have tried out one of the four boxes of beer glass paddles my daughter bought...

    Refractometer readings

My post mash gravity was 1.044 on my refractometer - just ahead of the expected 1.041. Next day I poured the wort from the cube onto the yeast cake of the previous beer, and didn't take test the OG until I'd done that - because I assumed perhaps some sugars may have settled in the cube. But...

    BIAB/MIAB bag not draining

I use a colander in the bottom of my urn to keep the bag off the element. When I pull the bag out, I drop the colander in my big bucket, and put the bag on top. Meanwhile I can heat it up to the boil while the bag drains in the bucket. I add it later in the boil. I have a second bucket that I...

Calculating SG from nutrition information - pear juice

I didn't know the relationship to g/l of a substance to the SG. So - I found this online calculator, if total carbs are 12.5g/100ml, and IF total carbs by weight is the same as total sugar by weight, then the SG must be 1.048. That's assuming that total carbs by weight is the same as the...

Calculating SG from nutrition information - pear juice

Excuse my ignorance, what's oP? Then, plus the 9.4 sugars - are they treated the same? Or do they mean that total carbs are 12.5 and sugars are 9.4 of this total?

Calculating SG from nutrition information - pear juice

Not sure how to calculate SG for pear juice from nutrition information. When I made the cider on sat, I measured the SG using my refractometer and it seemed ridiculously low - 1.017. I tried some store bought apple juice with my refractometer and it was 1.040. I realised later - duh - I hadn't...

How to get started in Cider. The definitive(ish) guide to beginner&#39

Pear cider After reading all 17 pages here, not so much info on pear ciders, which is what I want to try in a few small batches - starting with store-bought juices. I'm not sure how much pure pear changes anything to the previous discussion here. I'm after a relatively dry finish, bottle...

    GF help

Hi. Just picked up this old topic - I'm interested in Clarity Ferm because my girl loves my ales but shouldn't be drinking them. On the other hand I don't want to ruin the taste of a whole batch of beer if it doesn't work or doesn't taste good. This experiment seems to address the two...

    Lactose intolerance and ciders

Searching out ciders (apple, pear) for someone who is lactose intolerant. 1. Any brands that feature lactose free sweetening? 2. Does anyone brew a cider without lactose? I find most artificial sweeteners quite medicine-like. Be interested in a recipe that overcomes that. Haven't done a cider...

    Half batch starter?

There's probably something really wrong with this idea, but it would be helpful to understand what it is. Haven't been able to brew for 9 months and have a wyeast 1272 american ale yeast that I've had for that long. Popped the bag yesterday and it has swelled, but not fully. Grain and grape is...

Free fridge - well, trade for half dozen ales - Baxter, Vic

Getting rid of an old Kelvinator 380l cyclic defrost - not pretty but just keeps going. Keeps beer cold, freezer compartment works. I use a tempmate for control, which works well. Bought a new kitchen fridge, so the old kitchen fridge is going to replace the kelvinator in my shed. I haven't...

gone to the dark side. cling film for lid.

Just guessing - but why not get some heavy duty tape and make a criss cross with it on the cling wrap. Two layers of cling wrap for strength or run the tape to the sides. Then stick a hole through.
