Improving efficiency when using wheat and oats

I did 2 back-to-back brews on Saturday with identical mash schedules, but got very different efficiencies. NEIPA = 72% conversion, 65% brew house Best Bitter = 92% conversion, 82% brew house The obvious difference is the NEIPA had 13% malted wheat and 13% rolled oats. What can I do to help the...

    Red/Amber Pale ale critique

So I made a few slight changes and turned it into a hoppier Irish Red and went ahead with brew day. Also cold steeped the Carafa and CaraAroma grains and added to the end of the boil.

    Red/Amber Pale ale critique

I'm planning a brew for Sunday and after too much deliberation I have settled on a Red/Amber pale ale. Can someone take a look to see if it look OK? https://www.brewersfriend.com/homebrew/recipe/view/1131835/red-pa BTW, I'm remote so don't have ready access to a HBS, but I do have Carafa...

    KegLand Questions and Answers

I'll 2nd that. Or have the 0-30psi as the default, which seems to me to be the most versatile range?

    50L keg uses

So I started using one of the kegs for pressure fermenting a Munich Dunkel. Not temp controlled, but steadyish at 12C in my shed with the cool weather we've been having. I've got a tube from the spunding valve to a jar and it's been bubbling like crazy. What sort of head space should I be...

    Maybe underpitched lager?

I brewed a version of a Munich Dunkel on Sunday in my new BIAB setup (65L digiboil) and am pressure fermenting in a 50L keg. All went great with the wort going into the fermenter at 17C and me realising I have double the wort so I pitched 2 packets of Lallemand Diamond yeast. Not sure how it's...

    "Gin" Seltzer

Has anyone used spirit essences to flavour a seltzer? I'm considering using a Strawberry gin essence, with maybe a bit extra strawberry essence but I'm not sure on the amounts required. I'd have though one bottle of essence (which makes 2.25L of gin) would be enough for the gin flavour and just...

    Low Attenuation issues

Ahh, yeah, that was a smack-pack.

    Low Attenuation issues

I used London III 1318 for the porter and Nottingham on the mild. Yes, that's because I had a better efficiency and got a 6 point higher OG. Both fermented at 18C for 3-4 days then 21C for the remainder of the ferment. The Porter reached terminal FG on day 6 and the Mild on day 3. Total...

    Low Attenuation issues

The last 2 batches of beer (London Porter and a Dark Mild) had both had very low attenuation, but each batch was done differently. https://www.brewersfriend.com/homebrew/recipe/view/1124926/tubbsy-s-london-porter/381043...

    Higher efficiency on English Porter

Weighed myself, using the same balance as the previous brews. I haven't checked how accurate it is though.

    Higher efficiency on English Porter

Thanks Mark. Went back and checked, and yes, it's dihydrate CaCl2. Have also go some Phosphoric acid on the way. What else is there to increase Ca without affecting Cl and SO4? Also, the hop utilisation figure of 98% is a multiplier, not the actual utilisation. Each individual hop addition has...

    Higher efficiency on English Porter

How did you calculate the efficiency? The 80% I got came from the BrewersFriend brew calculators. Also, pH looks like it might be the "culprit". I haven't used really dark malts before and I read they can lower mash pH. So that along with the acid probably got me to a point that the mash worked...

    Higher efficiency on English Porter

Yes, pre-boil volume was as expected. Yes, identical to my other brews. I didn't check the pH, but added citric acid as per the recipe. I've never done this recipe before, or any other like it. The recipe has a calculated mash pH of 5.21. Yes, mash was fine and normal. No recirc as I use an...

    Higher efficiency on English Porter

BTW - I messed up the hop additions too, and I wasn't even drinking! It was supposed to be 25g of Fuggles and EKG as a 30 min hop stand, but I saw the 30min in the brew steps and added 30 min into the boil. So I added 15g of EKG dry hopped to add a touch of aroma.

    Higher efficiency on English Porter

I've been running pretty close to 70% brewhouse efficiency on all my AG brews so far so that's the number I use for recipe development. I brewed an English Porter the other night and was expecting a pre-boil gravity of 1.037, but I ended up with 1.050. I added an extra litre of water to the...

    50L keg uses

What are the best uses for 50L kegs at a homebrew scale? I now have a 65L Digiboil, so a keggle isn't needed. I mash in a 45L esky, so a mash tun isn't needed. I was thinking about a kegmenter for pressure fermenting, but the size is a bit small to make the most out of the Digiboil(50L post...

    How many use bottles?

I bottle only because I just started out and am doing it on the cheap. But even with spare cash, I would still bottle at least half as my kegerator would need to be in my shed, which is away from the house. No way I'm walking out to the shed each time I want a beer. With bottles I can grab a...
