Crown/Birko Urn Brewing With The Lid On

I am using a Crown concealed element urn and get an evaporation rate of 3.5 litres per hour. The urn is wrapped in a camping mat to protect from the cold Tassie weather. The other thing is to scrape the element with a paint stirrer before starting the boil to remove any stuff that may have...

How do you do your all extract brew

One difference in what I use to do was add any DME/sugar etc at the end of the boil rather than after its cooled, kill any nasties.

    Double Boil?

Don't know anything about the braumeister. If it was me I would complete the mash cycle and then do the boil after you return.

Crown 40 L urn power usage

It takes my Crown Urn about 60 minutes to heat cold water up to strike temperature. After the mash about 45 minutes to mash out to then to boiling. I boil for 70 minutes. So say 3 hours total 3 * 2.4 * .277 = $2 per brew for power

    Refractometer v hydrometer

It's not often I disagree with Bribie G but don't get one with an SG scale, waste of time. Once you start fermenting a wort then needs a calculation, plenty around. I don't brew high alc beers so I have a 0- 18 Brix one.

    Kit and Kilo online calculator?

Glad you found it Bob, sorry it's in funny units (metric and EBC). I would treat hopped DME as basically the same as a kit. I don't think its on sale here in Australia. You would need to find its IBU and EBC then add it to the KITS worksheet, you would also have to put the weight used in each...

    Kit and Kilo online calculator?

Some others have found low OG when using speciality grains. I used up to 0.9kg speciality grains with extract and did not find a problem so could be in cracking your grains (I bought milled grains). There is very little data on steeping grains. Anyway in version 4.1 you can change the steeping...

    C02 Tassie?

My understanding is Supergas send the cylinders to Victoria to be refilled, or at least the was the case a couple of years ago when I bought 2 used 6kg cylinders from them.

    extract with specialty grains method

Personally I would not bother boiling the top up water. I would use more than 3 litres of water for steeping the grains given you are going to boil 11 litres. I have no problem with 1kg of speciality grains, although the max I used was 900g in 23 litres. With 1kg of speciality grains you...

    Kit And Extract Beer Spreadsheet

Hi gc The calculation involving kits is based on the full kit and picks up values from the Kits worksheet. What you are doing is correct if only using part of the kit.

    Using Malt vs Dextrose?

Why treat a can of malt any different from the kit. I think with the malt instead of dextrose you will get a better beer. my 2c

    Starting full extract brewing

When i did extract brewing I did not like handling bulk LDME so I use to buy 20kg bags (about $125) of light DME. I use to bag it up in 2 kg lots and found it much easier to handle. Once you decide want you want to brew you will need some speciality grains and hops, suggest you have a look at...

Small Boil Hop Schedules - IBU Calc Discrepancies

The spreadsheet has two calculations, without the HCF and with it. Without uses Tinseth's Calculations which can be found here. http://realbeer.com/hops/research.html This is how IBU's are normally calculated and you can enter your numbers into an online calculator. The reason for the second...
