Coopers getting in on the game of daft brewing machines?

It sure looks cool though... My 2c. They're trying to make homebrew go mainstream, which is very powerful if they succeed. If they can make brewing quality beer as easy and convenient as cooking dinner, there's the potential for yet another revolution in the way beer is produced - disrupting...

Keg Scale and Digital Tap List project

Awesome, thanks MHB. Yep I'd rather know about the small errors now rather than 6 months down the line when the test procedures are giving wacky results. Hey I'm surprised (relieved) that nobody has asked about different keg sizes yet. So far I'm designing for cornie kegs using a 21cm diameter...

Keg Scale and Digital Tap List project

Hey if users have a tablet sitting on their fridge (like I did) I could fit a "download the app" QR code on the screen and generate one for the event too. No stickers, no NFC? I love the idea.

Keg Scale and Digital Tap List project

You're a wealth of information Mark! Yes, it's definitely the electronics, sorry if I made it seem like the liquid would change mass. The load cells use a piece of metal under strain and as they heat and cool their output changes a little. Yes. This is one of the drawbacks of using weight...

Keg Scale and Digital Tap List project

I almost missed this part. This suggestion is totally next level and I love it because I'd use it for force carbing too. Just turn up the gas and leave it until you've gained X grams of CO2. In my tests without temperature compensation (images documented in my first post), the error for a full...

Keg Scale and Digital Tap List project

Wow so many great ideas. I'll try to address some of them. Regarding the differences in final gravity mentioned by paylyman, MHB and n87, by my calculation the difference between a 1.006 and a 1.020 f.g beer is about 1.5% by mass. My thoughts were that when you get down to your last pint...

Keg Scale and Digital Tap List project

A few months ago I had 2 great brews on tap. Naturally, one of them blew dry while I was entertaining guests - “Sorry guys, it’s just the porter now”. Straight afterwards what do you know? The porter blew dry as well. This happens to me a lot and it seems like kegs always abide by Murphy's law...

Yep, and it works great. But I'll start a separate thread for that, coz this thread is about :D

    IGulu - Brewing System

Wait a minute... I'm having de ja vu. It looks like they had some copyright issues, changed their name and re-launched on Indiegogo a few months after their Kickstarter campaign ended. Alas, Brooke and I pitched this idea to a seed accelerator about 18 months ago and they weren't convinced the...

    Keg level

Ahh yes, the bottomless keg, and his evil cousin - "the keg that unexpectedly blows dry when you have visitors over". Hey rass, do check out RaspberryPints and Kegbot if you haven't already. You may be able to piggyback off their efforts, but I must say your arduino solution sounds like it's...

    Heated Digital Stirplates

My 2c. It is yeast dependant, but as a rule of thumb I generally aim a few degrees above my main fermentation temperature. When I make a starter my first priority is to make a suitably sized culture of healthy, active, viable yeast. Whether or not the starter wort tastes great is a secondary...

    Heated Digital Stirplates

Thanks for all the positive feedback! This is our first winter since the Yeast Forges hit the market and they're really starting to make sense in this cold weather.

    STC-1000 went bang

Yeah, wow it appears to be an MCU and display driver in one. Alas, it's probably not a good candidate for hacking. Thanks for opening it up and sharing!

    STC-1000 went bang

I'd love to know what the microcontroller chip is. In those photos on HBT it was far too blurry to make out. It might just be a shift register in which case the microcontroller would be on the back of the PCB. If it's a PIC, AVR or anything common I'll probably pick up one of these...

    STC-1000 went bang

Given that the compressor motors are inductive I don't think it's as bad as you might expect when the contacts close as the current takes a few milliseconds to ramp up. The trouble is when the contacts open and there's nowhere for that current to flow, it causes arcing in the relay contacts that...

Why do ALL of my can kits taste bad?

I think I'm seeing a trend that most brewers that are happy with their K&K's are using dry malt instead of BE2?

Why do ALL of my can kits taste bad?

Wait, I thought HWA was no longer in vogue. Did it start affecting beers again after that german paper on low oxygen brewing was published last month? But seriously I do like your suggestion. Whether HWA (or HSA or HWO) is fact or fiction, I will try to eliminate it from my next K&K...

Why do ALL of my can kits taste bad?

Yep, in my early days I brewed many K&Ks, Home Brand Draught, Tooheys Special Draught, Coopers Mexican Cerveza, Coopers Lager, English Bitter, some experimental "Toucan" batches and many more that my mother in law kept buying for me... I never stomached more than a few glasses of them before...

Why do ALL of my can kits taste bad?

I've brewed bad AG batches too - too many hops, too many cacao nibs, crappy malt choices, high finishing gravity, oh and the time I tried to toast and smoke my own wheat for a dunkelweizen (thanks iron brewer comp!)... but in all cases they still tasted like beer, never like a KK. Do let us know...
