    Problems with yeast rinse

I split one of the jars out into half and filled with more distilled water on Sunday night, see the picture below, still not sure I can see the split of where the yeast is though. I can see a darker layer on top but is this the yeast?

    Problems with yeast rinse

Hi, I posted this issue in the Yeast Rinsing Experiment - Yeast Vs Trub/break thread but haven't managed to get any responses and thought it might be due to the old thread or maybe I didn't give enough information. Anyway, basic issue is that I am trying to rinse my yeast for the first time...

Yeast Rinsing Experiment - Yeast Vs Trub/break

OK, so first time trying to wash/rinse yeast and I may not have picked the best yeast, WLP029, only classed as a medium flocculating yeast but it seems to compact down quite well ..... I topped my yeast cake up with a litre or two of distilled water but had to go out so chilled all the mason...

When you are tired of hoppy beers what do you brew?

I'm not a huge hoppy flavour person but I've brewed a few kolsch beers, lagers, bocks and I've just brewed Dr S Golden Ale, messed up the hopping but don't think it is supposed to be overly hoppy.

    Spunding Valve

Ahhhhh, that makes sense. May have to just reduce my fermenter volume. Does anyone include a NRV between the keg post and the gauge?

    Spunding Valve

May sound stupid but are all you guys that are fermenting in kegs, are they 50 litre kegs? Assuming you would have to reduce the volume to ferment in a standard corny key?

$25 grain mill motor from bread maker

Would the coupler get round that though? Seems like in one of the posts they were able to work with two different shaft sizes?

$25 grain mill motor from bread maker

Ahhhhh, I think the pulleys were a necessary part of the build to increase the torque or something (and possibly reduce the speed to the correct remember) ....... seems the bread maker option might still be alive, currently following one at $1 so worth a punt

$25 grain mill motor from bread maker

Yeah, it was actually your post that made me ask the question, don't want to waste time/money sorting out the bread machine motor if it just isn't good enough

$25 grain mill motor from bread maker

Sorry to drag up an old old thread but after joining in on the mill BB I was looking for motor options. I already have a drill with adjustable speed which should work but I am keen to build something I can just flick on and off. Keen to understand if anyone is still using a bread machine motor...

    THe Famous Doctor S

Good luck with your first AG brew. Remember my first BIAB, exciting and slightly daunting at the same time. Only thing I'll add is have an outline of the brew steps printed out and make sure you have everything laid out and organised. The process isn't that complicated but it'll help and...

Remedy for lack of hop flavour in Dr Smurtos GA

I was a bit surprised by the hop packaging but hoped they knew what they were doing. I've actually moved to Auckland so I won't be able to use any of the site sponsors but I think I'll start looking at other suppliers. Water profile was something I was thinking of looking at but a bit down the...

Remedy for lack of hop flavour in Dr Smurtos GA

Was thinking about starting to brew with them just chucked into the urn but wasn't sure how they would settle in the fermenter? I cold crash so think they should settle out with everything else? This is how the hops are sold, no vacuum seal which does worry me a bit, assume they buy in bulk and...

Remedy for lack of hop flavour in Dr Smurtos GA

Thanks for all the replies guys, wanted to wait till I could read over my notes. Seems the lack of hop flavour started off in the fermenter. Sun Wk1 - Brewed beer & pitched Wed Wk1 (fermenter sample) - Good flavour Mon Wk2 (fermenter sample) - Tasted pleasant, possibly lacking a bit of hop...

Remedy for lack of hop flavour in Dr Smurtos GA

I brewed a Dr Smurto's Golden Ale (rye version) but substituted in Simcoe as the hop (still bittered to 30IBU including 30g additions at 5 mins and 0 mins), from my notes it seemed to taste OK when fermenting but now I've kegged it all I am getting is the beer (malty) flavour and nothing from...

    Whats In The Glass (commercial)

Lucky pick at the local bottleshop, really tasty pilsner, not too bitter and a nice flavour. Lighter than it looks in the picture, definitely keen to try and replicate something similar in the near future.
