Melboune Ale Yeast wlp059 & Yeast Bay

I'd just like to say I love your work Steve. Not only have you chased up and delivered on a special-order yeast but did so through PMs and provided fast and well packaged deliveries. There's a lot to be said for going the extra mile for these sorts of things because I don't see there's any...

Yet another Arduino Based Brewing controller

Good news - converter has brought the unit back to life. Goes straight into the 5V pin on the board. I still get the occasional freeze if things are plugged into the 240V sockets but it looks like all the other niggles have been solved. Back to brewing!

So my temp probe fell off..

The most critical time for temp control is in the first stage of the fermentation, where most of the flavour elements are developed by the yeast. Once you hit the secondary stage where growth has slowed and the yeast begins to settle a slight increase in temp is often desirable, but not...

Vic 2017 Xmas in July Case Swap

Mine finished at 1.024 according to my hydrometer and didn't want to budge from there. One day I might try WLP085 again, maybe this particular vial needed more get-up-and-go or there wasn't enough life in it. It certainly did ferment, sadly unlike MB's free frozen vial. Ed: one thing I will say...

Transferred the swap brew last night, got tar?

What are you brewing in 2017 ?

Been a while since the last brew, so dusted off the gear after a keg blew last night for a crack at a long-lost style: Australian bitter ale. Now that WLP059 Melbourne Ale has been released and is in the mail I brewed a Tooth's White Horse Ale thanks to Korev. 1.470 kg MO 1.370 kg JW pils 0.335...

Yet another Arduino Based Brewing controller

I'm still getting a heap of hassles with this controller. I changed the sensor which worked during a test run, but as soon as I went to use it for some reason it kept freezing. After a few restarts it came good but then kept freezing until I got a white screen. I gave up and got the STCs out...

Vic 2017 Xmas in July Case Swap

FFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU... I got my new Nano's in the mail and long story short, the temp sensor was at fault and fried another Nano. And no, not the sensor we were dipping into the mash to measure the bed temp. FML, but after some faffing about at least the controller's ready for a brew tomorrow...

Mexican Lager yeast - weird starter (floccy?)

It would be perfect for some beers as it definitely reminded me of Corona. It didn't work well with PoR and didn't exhibit any of the cattiness we all know and love in the likes of VB and New. Damn now I'm sad about 2042 again :( If you're doing a double batch why not put the WLP940 in one and...

Mexican Lager yeast - weird starter (floccy?)

I've used Mexican lager once and all I can remember from it is I wasn't a fan of the results (no good for an Aussie lager, too bland would you believe). 'Fruity' aroma suits this yeast. Lager yeasts tend to be rather fluffy. Personally I wouldn't use a >2 year old lager yeast but that's me. If...

Yet another Arduino Based Brewing controller

The driver is fine, and yes it is a clone. I have 3 x Unos but it looks like they have the wrong bootloader in them. I needed to select Duemilanove or Diecimila board to upload. I'll burn the correct bootloader on them tonight, only worked it out just before hitting the sack.

Yet another Arduino Based Brewing controller

I'm gonna need help here I think Mr Wibble. I fried my old Uno and have since upgraded my PC to Windows 10. The program you wrote compiles fine but for some reason I keep getting a 'programmer not responding' error regardless of how I try to connect to the unit. Driver has been updated, Windows...

Thermapen cheaper in UK than USA

They're a necessary item for ANY kitchen. If you have a spouse that cooks she needs it. Roasts, pies, steaks, making sure chicken is fully cooked - it not only makes sense for god food but also food safety, especially for your kids. You owe to your family to buy one. Then store it in the brewery.

    WLP085 English Ale Blend

I recently picked up a vial to use in a swap brew, a strong stout. I can't find any details on it on the forum and minimal on the web. Here's the White Labs blurb: "A blend of British ale yeast strains designed to add complexity and attenuation to your ale. Moderate fruitiness and mineral-like...

Vic 2017 Xmas in July Case Swap

For a PBW-alike go 3:1 sodium percarbonate:sodium metasilicate. I've found 30g/1.7l (a capful of sodium perc and a boiled jug of water) excellent for a single fermenter, keg or cube. My brew has sat at 1.024 now and doesn't look to be going anywhere. It tastes good but 1.024 feels high. I used...

Very interesting LC, glad to have your input. I'll add these adjectives to my tasting vocabulary.

Vic 2017 Xmas in July Case Swap - TASTING

Interesting, I've used brown malt once in a brown porter but it was my first AG brew so can't remember the specifics. I've noted there is a complete absence of nuts in there, are you sure you didn't mix the Peal [sic] for walnuts? Nah surely not, you would have noticed it during the crush. Maybe...

Vic 2017 Xmas in July Case Swap - TASTING

    7. mofox1 - Monster Pale (drink now) ****** mobile app won't let me post anything in this thread and I'm too lazy to get my phone cord. I wanted to post the pic because the head on this beer was borderline intense: dense, foamy and lacing all the way down my Headmaster glass. Couldn't ask for...

Vic 2017 Xmas in July Case Swap - TASTING

'Tis my own concoction that one, I've brewed (tragically) a few wheats and have steered them down to where I would like them to be, which overall isn't all that wheaty because I reckon wheats are rubbish. Except this one of course, it's amazing :p A few things contributed to it which are worth...

What's good to watch on netflix?

There's a documentary on Steve Jobs that's a lost interview from before he returned to Apple. Really interesting. Also Suits and Brook Nine Nine.
