First BIAB - Help me understand the numbers

The fact your mash temperature went up suggests that the water was not uniform in temperature, needs to be vigourously stirred whilst measuring the temperature. I use a 40 L concealed element crown urn and average 3.5 litre/hr boil off (5.25 for 90 mins). Birko should match or slightly better...

    biab/ milling / efficiency help

Cannot help with the high OG brews. Whilst basically all my beers are <1.050 OG in my case grinding the grain finer increased my efficiency by 3%. This is based on over 100 brews. As others have said, 90 minute mash and do a few simple brews to get a feel of your setup.

    1.5 Ltr Bottles

Carb drops to me are a waste of money, dextrose is better as you can weigh out exact amounts. I use 1.5 litre PET bottles and use 7 grams of dex per bottle or if bulk priming use 120 grams dex for 23 litres for pale ales.

    Starting Wyeast

Here's how i do it, whether it is easier I don't know but suits my method of brewing. I smack the Wyeast pack and once it's swelled up split the smack pack into 5 parts. I store these in my conditioning fridge at 1C. When I brew I make 1.5 litres extra wort which is used for the yeast starter...

Refractometers: is there a recommended brand / manufacturer?

I would buy one with just a Brix scale, a lot less cluttered, then use a formula to determine SG. If you get one with an SG scale it is only any good (the SG scale) before fermentation starts. Once fermentation starts you need a calculation to determine the SG or a hydrometer which partly...

Fix For Crown Urn Boiling Issues

Similar sort of findings, get 3.3 - 3.4 l/hr boil off in the garage in winter. Urn lagged with camping mat, 31 litres start of boil volume (100C) Averaged 3.49 l/hr boil off over 130 brews in crown urn. No mods just scape element cover before start of boil.

    Kit And Extract Beer Spreadsheet

No problems, the original version of the spreadsheet used the BJCP guidelines, with their permission before I discovered the AABC guidelines. So you can use a mix if you want to. The other thing is to copy the BJCP description for Amber Ale and paste it into a comment in column B.

    Kit And Extract Beer Spreadsheet

Hi An American Amber Ale does not seem to be in the AABC sytle guidelines which the spreadsheet uses, but is in the BJCP style guidelines. http://www.bjcp.org/2008styles/style10.php#1b You can just added it to the style worksheet, Double the SRM to convert to EBC.

    Yeast Starter

To me one advantage of chilling a starter is that it just needs decanting and allowed to warm up and it is ready to go. Also allows me to make the starter using wort from the previous brew. My procedure split smack pack 5 ways, store at 1C. Put one in 500 ml of wort on stirrer for 24 hours. Add...

    Rolled Oats - IanH's spreadsheet

This thread might help http://aussiehomebrewer.com/topic/57056-wtf-stout-recipe-with-rolled-oats-and-eff-indicates-no-fermentables-e/ Do they need mashing or can they be steeped?

Wyeast 1768 PC ESB heads up

I split these smack packs 5 ways and still have no problems with starters and subsequent fermentations, reckon they are good for 12 months. Love 1768 PC.

Sometimes you forget how big, really impressively huge it is

Drawing a map of the outline of Australia over Europe on the same scale was only way I could get my folks in the UK to understand the size of Australia. Living in NW WA at the time. Driving round Australia was the equivalent of setting off from the UK driving across Europe into Russia, down...

On brew day, what do you do during the wait times?

My brew day usually starts at about 04:45, I crush my grains the night before to lessen the noise so as not to disturb the neighbours at that time in the morning. Takes about an hour to heat the water up to strike temperature. Get the mash started have breakfast and watch the news. While doing...

    Hi from North WA

Welcome to the site seemore. Time to buy whole bags of grain and postage to NW WA is not much more than other areas in Australia. You may need to look at water treatment as some town water is pretty hard. When I lived up there Broome was 1000k away and the first 970k were dirt. Magic place...

How much should I trust my brewing software? (Brewtarget)

Hi I am not familar with your brewing software. Are you trying to brew an American Pale ale or American IPA (looks more like IPA to me) two different styles. For comparison I put the values into my spreadsheet, stickied on Kits & Extract forum. I get og 1.063 fg 1.019 IBU 60 EBC 10. So agree...

    Kit And Extract Beer Spreadsheet

Hi LRG You could do this by adding the grains to the grain list and adjusting the steeping grains efficiency value to reflect mashing rather than steeping.
