    Refractometer vs Hydrometer Reading

Sorry my bad, I was thinking the salinity one would not have the range (was thinking sea water rather than salinity). But cannot explain your measurements, whilst once fermentation starts the refractometer reading needs a correction applied but in any case the reading is going to be lower than...

    Refractometer vs Hydrometer Reading

You need a Brix refractometer not a salinity one, measuring sugar not salts.

    Biab Beer Designer Spreadsheet

Thanks Mat B. Because a keggle does not have straight sides you would have to work out the height for volume. But if you brew similar beers then could measure the diameter at that water level and use that as a pot diameter. Not sure how it will work but you give it a try.

    PET vs glass.

First thing I used to do when using the brown PET bottles was to get rid of the tamper-proof ring and just use the cap. An advantage of PET bottles is you can squeeze them to see how well carbed they are.

    PET vs glass.

Were the PET bottles the Coopers brown bottles, soft drink bottles or juice/water bottles. You should have no problems with the first two providing the headspace is ok and they are kept at 20C or so for a few days.Whilst I keg I do 2 by 1.5L PET bottles per batch and have no problems with...

    First BIAB, low OG, Why?

Another factor is volume of water and how did you measure it. I found the best way is using a steel rule to measure the depth of water. I use a Crown urn and the calcs are in the spreadsheet pinned to the forum. I would suggest using a 70% efficiency till you get more brews under your belt.

    Kit And Extract Beer Spreadsheet

Hi Zoiks If you want to play around with half cans you need to change the data on the Kits worksheet. For Black Rock and Coopers you need to change the EBC and IBU values in columns E & F using other Kits change values in columns B & C. If doing it on a regular basis just add new lines for the...

    Kit And Extract Beer Spreadsheet

You only have to boil if adding hops. The boil time depends on the time selected to obtain a certain bitterness.

    Cold crash

Give it the 10 days to allow it to clear up, otherwise you will probably finish with a hazy beer or a lot of sediment in the bottle. Cant rush these things, either way I would not be drinking it in 3 weeks.

    Great British Beer Festival

Hi LB. Should be in the UK about that time and staying near London the first week. I'll need to check the dates when I get back home to see if I can make it. Currently enjoying a Manta beer in New Caledonia for about $11 per 500ml

Is there any significant in using liquid malt extract and dry malt ext

When doing extract brewing I just used light dry malt extract as a base for everything and then steeped grains to get the variations I required. Dry malt is easy to handle and I used to split my 20kg bags down and store in vacuum sealed bags.

    Hello From Tasmania

I think there are now 7 or 8 forum members in the NW. Don't know anything about your temperature controller but the nornal STC1000 ones only control 10 Amps max, I do BIAB and set my brew volumes so I finish with just over 22 litres, 19 litres for the keg and fill 2 by 1.5 litre bottles.

    Formual to calculate Alchohol Percentage

Saved me from finding this. In my spreadsheets I use 131 as the factor, but you can use 130 or 131 for most beers. The error in measuring the OG and final SG is greater than the error from the factors. Plus you also need to take into account the extra sugar added by the carbonation drops when...

    Biab Beer Designer Spreadsheet

Post Boil, I put some of the wort into the cube then 500ml in a flask for the starter and another 1L into a container then continue to fill the cube. After the yeast starter has been fermenting for 24 hours the 1L has been added and fermented for a further 72 hours the starter is then stored at...

    Biab Beer Designer Spreadsheet

I have my volume to fermenter set at 23 litres and trub losses set at 3.0 litres (I take out 1.5 litres for a yeast starter) which gives me about 24.5 litres at end of boil to go into cube. Takes about 24litres to fill the cube. I then leave about a litre in the cube when I transfer to the...
