Who else drinks their starter beer?

I usually try it just to see it doesn't taste off, and sometimes it's quite nice as a bonus. The other handy test to do with the starter "beer" after it's been whirling around getting oxygenated on a stirplate for 36 hours or so, is to take an FG reading, which is then a good guide to what to...

    heating for fridge

If you don't mind a bit of noise, I found an el-cheapo hair dryer is effective. Not too powerful, and blows the hot air around nicely.

2017 Christmas Case Swap at pcqypcqy's - Stanthorpe SEQ 2nd Decemb

Just bottled my Smoked Porter for the swap, and noticed one PET a little shorter and somewhat slimmer than the rest, so someone's going to be short-changed! I only had exactly 24 new caps, and too far out-of-town to slip in and grab some more, so there are no spares in PET bottles either. I...

Cleaning and storing 20l cubes ready for wort

Well blow me down - I just filled Fat Albert and, like rude's, it holds a tad over 23kg water as well (24.10 - 1.08). The way it looked, and felt tight as a drum I was sure it'd expanded more than that. And the test water I used won't be wasted. It'll go into the HLT for this week's brew.

Cleaning and storing 20l cubes ready for wort

I'd guess 24 litres now, maybe close on 25. If it rains this afternoon and the tank overflows, I'll fill it, weigh it, and report. :D

Cleaning and storing 20l cubes ready for wort

My cube was due for a good clean this morning, after having been used for more than a few no-chills, including quite a few stouts, porters and other darkish beers. So in accordance with directions, I used 60g Sodium Percarbonate and hot (62C) water, filled, and screwed on the cap. I "assumed"...

The connection setup is usually printed on the board near the connectors, like in this one which looks pretty similar:

    Want to borrow refrac

The presence of alcohol in the liquid being tested will distort the results. There is a formula which can be applied to a refrac reading, but it requires an initial (unfermented) refrac reading. EDIT: Unless I've misunderstood what you want it for...

How to dispose of spent grains?

Ladle it out to them on the side of an axe! EDIT: - Err - that's the cure if they won't lay!!!

How to dispose of spent grains?

My neighbour's chooks usually get mine, but last weekend they weren't home, so next morning I tipped it in the paddock, and for days after, the resident wallabies reckon it's just the duck's nuts!

    First all grain beer help

Some HB-ers 'cold-crash' the brew before bottling. That is dropping the temp down to just above freezing for a couple of days to help the yeast drop out and clarify the beer before bottling. I usually wait for the finished FG to be steady for 3 or 4 days, then bottle-o. (As long as the FG is...

    Recommended stir plate for starters

Try searching the GC-Supermarket site. The range of stuff they sell, chip as chips, is amazing: http://stores.ebay.com.au/G-C-Supermarket-HK-Co-Ltd/_i.html?_nkw=12v+fan&submit=Search&_sid=1090683909

    Recommended stir plate for starters

I've put together quite a few stir-plates, and can highly recommend PWM (pulse width modulation) speed controllers like this one http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/6-30V-DC-Motor-Speed-Controller-Reversible-PWM-Control-Forward-Reverse-switch-/351600935082?hash=item51dd0c80aa The bare bones basic models...

Big Post Of Water Around Australia

A report on water quality ( http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-09-06/drinking-water-contaminated-with-pathogens-in-nsw-towns/8875464 ) is a good reason to boil your water is some areas. (Bribie G ?). Ha- AGHBer's do this anyway. I KNEW there was a valid reason for drinking beer, not water...

What styles work well with rain water?

I think it's generally accepted that starting with clean rainwater (away from sources of pollution) is really starting with a "blank canvas", after which additives can be introduced to create the water profile you want for a particular style. But sure, good soft water is the go for the likes of...
